Avila, Segovia, or Toledo???

We will be driving from San sebastian for the last four nights of our trip and would like to spend them all in one place - we aren't much on less then 3 days in one place at a time and doing day trips from there. Toledo is going to be an extra hour drive on top of the 5 hours that I think it will take to get to Avila (4.5 to Segovia) and I don't know if it is owrth stretching for 6 hours to get to Toledo as a base. My gut tells me that I would enjoy Toledo the most - I don't mind the tourists and love those towns at night and in early morning when tourists aren't around (Rothenburg).

Any suggestions?

Of the three, I would go with Toledo as well, but I do rather wonder whether it warrants four nights...

Would you consider two nights Toledo and two nights Madrid, with a day trip to Avila?

Or have you thought of two nights Salamanca (closest of all, I think, and well worth seeing) and two nights Toledo?

Have you considered Madrid as a base? As I recall, Segovia, Avila, and Toledo can each be reached easily from there.

I am not sure I would want to spend 4 nights in Toledo, which is not to say it is not fascinating and worthwhile. Times ten.

Segovia might be a good base for you since from there you can do day trips to Avila, to El Escorial, and to La Granja. And you will be within an hour or less of Pedraza, which to me is one of Spain's most beautiful towns. Along with nearby Sepulveda, it is a center for roast suckling lamb which is one of the world's greatest dishes. Truly, there is so much to see around Segovia that you could stay busy for a week.

If you are intereted in the Segovia idea, you could read the report I wrote last spring, which is mostly about food but might have some useful information for you.

i think avila is the easiest of the three and most convenient to get into and out of for the touring you will be doing.

it is a more comfortable city and more low key, thus giving you a less hectic start and finish everyday imho.

check out www.gtahotels.com or the parador there.
www.talonotel.com and www.bancotel.com will also have good offers, i am sure.

toledo is like the center of the spokes of a wheel, and depending on where you are staying in the town, it can be quite trying to take the most direct spoke out of town!
