I am trying to find a hotel within the 65-70 euro range. I found hotel carofftel with a promotion for 65 euros. website says its "near" the latin quarter. I don't want to be fooled so how close is 'Near'?
HElp!?

also considering:
grand hotel jeanne d'arc
hotel de france
royal cardinal
Thanks

Type any address into the "photos of cities" section on this site to see a photo of the exterior, a map, and have the ability to "walk" up and down the street. The Carofftel is a couple of blocks north of the Gobelins metro stop, and several blocks south of the Censier Daubenton stop. (Metro info at: www.ratp.fr/ ) That is a fair hike southeast from what I consider the Latin Quarter, which would be closer to the Luxembourg/Place Monge stops. That said, the Metro does get you around easily, quickly and cheaply.

If you can get a room at the Jean D'arc, it gets great reviews and is a very central location. It books up well in advance, though!

I have stayed on rue des Ecoles, where the Royal Cardinal is located, and that is also a convenient neighborhood with lots of good cafes.

Type "royal cardinal AND paris" (or any other hotel name) in the text box here to pull up prior threads mentioning it.

Hi Renata,

Sorry for forgetting to paste the URL into the post last night. Here's the URL now. The hotel I looked at on this site was the Champ-de-Mars which is near the Eiffel Tower and is popular since I've seen lots of references to it. The price is within your budget - 76E with bath.

Gobelins is closer in than the Alesia which you asked about in your other post and I really like the rue Mouffetard area. So, I would choose the Carofftel over the Alesia based on location.

If you can afford to spend a bit more than I would choose the Royal Cardinal (again, this is based on location, I'm not familiar with this hotel). The rue des Ecoles is a very nice location, accessible to 2 metro stations and the Jardin des Plantes. There's lots to do in this area and it's nice for walking around at night. Have you done a search on this board for info on the Royal Cardinal?

Renata,
Rue des Ecoles in 5th arr is a pleasant area in Paris, many restaurants around, near Ile de la Cite, Notre Dame, Luxembourg garden, Sorbonne, etc. There are many hotels on this street, I've stayed in Hotel Minerve in May 2001,and find il very pleasant. There il also Hotel Familia ,Hotel St Jacques and Royal Cardinal, all these are 2*. Also hotels 3* Hotel Sully St germain which is very nice but more pricely (staying in many years ago. You will find all these hotels on
www.france-hotel-guide.com
Hope this will help you.

I agree with Adrienne -- that location is better than the Alesia and only a few blocks south of Censier isn't a bad area. However, I also think the rue d'Ecoles probably would be preferable. I posted on your other one but unfortunately it got lost -- basically that I mentioned the Monge because I thought it had rates close to what you wanted on some web sites, but it is over 65 euro, probably.

As for your other question on the rates, 75/130 euro probably refers to size of room and/or seasons. I think the Cujas Pantheon I mentioned has rates shown clearly by type of room on www.france-hotel-guide.com and the top rates are for triples, not doubles. It is more like 80 euro, however, as I recall.

I also suggested the Hotel de France which has summer discounts on that site, I believe, around your level. For others, that is probably the Hotel de France near place Monge on rue Mouffetard (there is another one in the 7th arr.) which has rates about 65-70 euro. I actually don't know anything about that hotel, but from the web site, it looks like a decent 2* hotel, about like the Jardins Alesia you were considering, so is not a bad choice IMO. It is a good location, and would be a better choice than the Alesia hotel (or even the one on ave des Gobelins).

As for the AC mentioned elsewhere for the Monge, you are right, it isn't absolutely necessary in Paris even in the summer, as temps are usually moderate. There can be heat waves, though, and I just thought if you could get one around the rate you wanted with AC, why not, you might be glad. However, I think the Hotel Residence Monge is more like 80 euro.
