Are they really enforcing the smoking ban in Ireland's pubs?
I'm leaving for Ireland in a week and was wondering if anyone has travelled there since the smoking ban and can tell me whether it's being strictly enforced?

The ban against smoking in Irish pubs went into effect in March, 2004. According to reports, the regulation has been strictly enforced. In the summer of 2002 and 2003, I visited a beautiful but “untouristed” part of Galway near the Roscommon border where my cousin’s family live in the village of Newbridge. During those trips we spent some time in the local pub where smoking (not to forget drinking) were enjoyed with relish. When I heard of the ban, I told my cousin, “I can’t believe that folks out in the country will not stop smoking at Cunningham’s (local pub).” But they did. This was unlike the situation in Massachusetts where the smoking ban was introduced gradually. Many restaurant and bar owners spend a great deal of money making one part of their establishment “smoke free” only to be told a year or two later that NO smoking was permitted. Ireland went “cold turkey” and it has worked from what I have heard.

Yes, I can vouch that the "no smoking" ban is effective. Some pubs have been quite creative in opening outdoor smoking areas with patio heaters, etc.
As a non-smoker, I feel I am missing out on a whole social scene that is happening outside with the smokers.
