Anyone ever stay at Istituto San Giuseppe in Venice?

Hi,

We will be in Vencie in Sept and were wondering if anyone has ever stayed at the Istituto San Giuseppe monastery in Venice? This seems like an affordable alternative to a hotel. I am wondering how to go about booking a stay at this monastery? I cannot find a web-site . If anyone has stayed here can you tell us how you booked your reservation and your opinion of the place.
Thanks

I'm at work right now, but I have a book at home on convent/monastery lodging. I'll check it tonight and see if they are listed and let you know. There are quite a few in Venice and I have the websites for some of them. Some of them house students (college) in the winter so it might depend on when your trip is in September. Usually school doesn't start until late September. What is your price range?

You can locate many of them with this website, but they are a booking agent and mark the price up 10-15E. They don't give contact information because they want you to book with them, but they do lis amenities (curfews, private or shared baths, transportation, meals, etc.).

Thanks Kybourbon. We will be there in early September. As far as price range anything around or under 100E per night for 2 people.

Istituto San Giuseppe, like many monasteries in Italy, takes bookings through Santa Bona.

The email address is [email protected].

Uh-oh. I got that information from www.hospites.it, which lists monastery stays throughout Italy, but when I tried to find Istituto S. Giuseppe through the Santa Bona Web site, I couldn't.

Maybe you should phone Istituto S. Giuseppe:
5402, CASTELLO
30122 Venezia (VE)
t. 041 5224891

Hospites.it used to be very helpful and you could locate websites/prices/e-mail. Now it just rolls over to Santa Bona, a booking engine.

Sorry degiulio, this one is not listed in my book, but there are several other (some with websites) if you want their info. I did find a review on Fodor's with all the contact info and a review on Slow Trav. On the Fodor's review, the blog link no longer works. Note that the phone number Zerlina posted is listed as the fax number on this review. I don't know which is accurate.

I haven't read the TA's thread but is this better?

http://vino-rosso-tripdiary.blogspot...y_archive.html

"Istituto San Giuseppe - Ponte della Guerra, Castello, 5402, Venice 30122 (tel. 041/522.5352, fax 041/522.4891) Good location. All have bath, but no meals. CC not accepted. Curfew: 11 p.m. Open: All year. Train station: Santa Lucia. Take water bus #1 or #2 to Piazza San Marco. Cross the Piazza, walk 2 blocks on Mercerie and turn right; go about 4 blocks to Ponte Guerre (a bridge), cross it and turn left immediately."

In order to get to Ponte della Guerra, you will pass by Campo San Zulian and the church of the same name, then to Calle de Guerra. Thinking about it somehow I remember this institut and "cross it and turn left immediately" makes sense with what I remember. After the bridge, you don't walk on Calle Cassellaria at all. "Turn left immediately" after the bridge is correct.

On the following map, Mercerie is the street that starts at Torre dell Orologio (Clock Tower)

Tried the e-mail from home last night, didn't work. Tried again this morning from work, didn't work. What I did was send a fax which was simple enough once I got the codes correct. Thanks for the help.

Did the e-mail bounce back as undeliverable?

Hello Deguilio:
I have stayed here twice and just made another booking. Forget the email addresses-- they have never really worked. You need to send a fax-- I wrote mine in English and provided a dodgy google translation. They will fax back a confirmation, with a map and a request to send a deposit-- generally a 50E traveler's cheque. Trust me, it works.

You know about the 10:30/11pm curfew? Otherwise, it is a brilliant (and economical) place to stay.

You may be running a little late now in terms of a booking, but it is worth a try. If not, someone has prepared a handy google map of other hospitality homes/ convents in Venice: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msa=0...144a023c6be3f2
Good luck.
