London&lt;&gt;Dublin, cheap, reasonably on time, held a plane for us when our connection was late (they saw us running toward the gate and took pity).<BR><BR>Would use them again.

Is it true that RyanAir has a very strict weight limit for luggage and charges huge fees for overweight, thus making up for their low airfares?

No problems with Ryanair - as Rex says, they are like Southwest (in fact, they are the third largest airline in Europe by market value, after BA and - I think - Lufthansa)

All airlines have a weight limit on checked baggage. About 40 kg domestic (US) - - I think - - maybe 30 kg international?<BR><BR>RyanAir DOES have a tight weight limit, and the surcharge for excess baggage is not trivial - - see the following from their website:<BR><BR>================================== ===<BR><BR>Checked baggage allowance is 15kg. Any excess over 15kg. is chargeable at an excess fee of &pound;4/6 [euros] per kilo (or local currency equivalent).<BR><BR>============================== =======<BR><BR>So your baggage surcharge could be more than your ticket. Competing against air fares that might be 10 times higher (for some routes), I guess this is tolerated by many, and praised by those who pack light, and enjoy letting someone else pay the higher cost.<BR>

Just a note of caution. They were featured on a cosumer television programme recently. This is what I gathered:<BR><BR>Check prices against other carriers - not always the cheapest. Sometimes traditional airlines(British Air and Virgin for example) can be cheaper and more convenient.Headline fares do not always include taxes and is sometimes on way.They fly into and out of off beat airports, not always near city, therefore your train/taxi/bus fare into city is an add on to the 'low' fare. They have haphazard schedules and cannot guarrantee seats. You can get stuck and not get the return flight if full.

I used Ryanair last Summer and would do so again without hesitation. Be aware that for some destinations, they use outlying airports (Torp vs. Oslo, Hahn vs. FRA, Beavouis vs. CDG) but the savings can be quite significant even tacking on a bus ride to the city centre. I booked Ryanair online and had no problems at all.

Second to Jayne's comment. Friends caught a flight back from Italy to the so-called Brussels South airport (really in a another town an hour away). The plane was late. No bus was available. They had to spent more than $50 for a cab to their hotel in Brussels. When they complained to RA, they were told basically to just deal with it. Some savings!! Caveat emptor!!

Debbie,<BR>Ryan Air is exactly the Southwest Airlines of Europe. The founder studied Southwest in details and set up his own version of the company in Ireland. I would highly recommend them - very inexpensive. But do be aware that just like Southwest, they do use some of the smaller airports rather than compete for gates at places like Heathrow, etc. Check the routes and be sure you know where you're going into so you can plan ahead and you'll have no problems!!!

JUST BE CAREFUL WHICH AIRPORT THEY ARE GOING TO. BOTH LONDON AND SCOTLAND WE WE WERE NOT AT THE MAIN AIRPORT AND IT WAS A LONG RIDE TO THE MAJOR CITIES. SON SPENT NIGHT IN TERMINAL IN LONDON. NO TRANSPORTATION AND HEFTY TAXI FARES.
