Hotel Calissano is a brand new, large and modern hotel just a block or two away from the old section of Alba and is getting very good reviews, while Hotel Savona is an older hotel right in the old section among beautiful classical buildings and gets the occasional bad review for things like comfort and tiny bathrooms.
We'll be in town for 5 nights in this coming fall for a little quiet time and wine tasting.
What would you do?

There are other, more well-reviewed hotels in the historical center of Alba besides the Savona. Have you looked at Palazzo Finati, Casa Dellatorre, Casa Bona, and/or Maison Douce? Personally, I don't like the modern hotels that look like they could be anywhere. I'd rather contend with a tiny bathroom.

Will you have a car? If so, you need to find out whether you can drive right to the front door of the hotels in the city center (many towns have traffic restrictions) and whether there is convenient parking either free or for a fee.

Yes. We stayed in Finati last year and it's too expensive for what it is, though it's certainly very nice. Casa Dellatorre has three rooms and is really a B&B, same for Casa Bona and Maison Douce. We're not B&B peeps, unfortunately, or we would indeed have more options.

We will have a car and parking is an issue, you're right. And I also agree about modern hotels. Hotel Calissano looks like it could be in Vegas. That's not the vibe I'm trying to achieve when I board a plane to a place like Alba.

Just back from a few days in Alba and we stayed just outside town at a wonderful place B & B called Villa Favorita... Rooms were good, breakfast was outstanding (best we had in two weeks in Italy), the grounds produce luscious fresh fruit for the testing (and vines). Best of all is the hospitality of Roberta, the B&B owner who made our first days in Italy the most unforgettable with her help and hospitality.

If you have a car, why not stay in one of the many B&B's around Alba and surrounding areas?

Villa Favorita is a drive into town, isn't it? We like to walk to coffee and dinner/drinks at night in Alba.

VF is a very short (Less than 5 minutes) drive into the center. Reportedly, there is also a walking path that descends to the Alba center, but we did not take it, as we had a car.

But I do understand your wish to be closer to the action. There are pros and cons of both locations, as you know.
