Airfares to Prague in early June - alternate routes?
Hi - My husband and I are taking his mother to Prague in early June 2002. Are schedule is very tight, so we can't change our timing. We are looking for 10 days - mostly in Prague, but also in the countryside (his mother is Czech-American).

Prices currently are over $1000 per person to get from Dallas to Prague. What are my chances they'll go down between now and then? I've looked into going to Germany and driving into Prague (we'd actually enjoy the trip), but the prices are not lower enough to make it worthwhile.

I'd appreciate any tips on airfare, even if it means that I just need to suck it up and pay it.

Thanks - Melanie

I'm looking for a similar fare and fares are very high this year. That fare is about what I'm finding for a slightly different itinerary but I've been checking for a month or more and they aren't going down. I'm about ready to book although it makes me sick because I'm afraid there won't be any seats (I need specific flights) if I wait. I went RT Washington DC-Prague a couple years ago in May and it was only about $550-600 whereas this year it's about $950. Same airline, both in May. I have specific city requirements and I want nonstop so can't change much, but I can tell you that you should look into Paul Laifer tours. They specialize in that area and have special deals with some of the local airlines, I think (Czech Airlines and maybe LOT and Malev) and often can give you cheaper fares. I think their URL is www.laifer-tours.com. They have tours, but also sell just airfare.

I believe that Czech Air and Malev only fly out of JFK. Czech Air's number is 800 223 2365.

You might look into flying into London or Frankfurt via British Airways, Virgin, or Lufthansa and then flying one of the inter-European carriers to Prague.

Have you priced out air to Frankfurt then train to Prague?

Beware of CSA. You get what you pay for. It wuldn't bother me but some prefer the little niceties of other national airlines.

What is it about airfares to Europe this summer? They are crazy!!! What happened to competition???

Melanie, we booked our Prague trip through Summit Tours flying on Continental from Buffalo to Newark and non-stop on Czech Airlines from Newark to Prague. If I remember, we paid $600.00 P/P.

Czech Airlines is a class act. I travel frequently for work and Czech Airlines beats US Airways, Northworst, American and Delta any day for comfort and service. And we flew economy class.

As an alternative, I'd probably try to fly into Frankfurt and then catch a train to Prague. It would be easy, to take a train at the airport to the hauptbahnhof, then straight to Prague. You could drive it, but it's not a short trip after that long flight, you know?

When we plan a trip and we don't like the fares, we just keep holding off, checking sometimes two or three times a week. We started off with $1,200.00 fares to Rome last year and then settled on $800.00 almost at the last minute. Also try checking the day before or the day after your ideal 'leave' date. Sometimes you can save a lot by changing the day of your departure. If you get a little creative, you can maybe find a deal, but I personally wouldn't take the $1,000 fare unless it was an emergency. Good luck.

We flew into Vienna where we spent 4 days and took the train (4 1/2 hrs) to Prague. If you haven't seen my recent post, however, be alert and cautious at the Prague train station and while boarding train. Also, know and agree on fare before entering a cab.
