Airfare to Western Europe in June 07
My Wife and I will be traveling to Amsterdam in June of 07. We plan to spend additional week or so after June 22nd. Have been to Europe many times but not in 3 years. Have the airfares really gone up that much or am I just trying to book too early? Can leave from Atl or EWR. Where would be the cheapest European city to fly to and then make our way to Amsterdam?
Thanks
Gary

curious as to why you say you can fly out of either Atlanta or Newark? you'll still have to connect at one of them, right? you aren't planning to book separate flights from 'home' to Atl/EWR, then the next leg out, are you..?

Airfares this summer will be high and discounts few. The dollar is continuing to weaken which makes US trip cheap for Europeans. Airlines do not care if the round trip tickets starts in the Europe or the US as long as the seat is filled both ways. Higher fuel prices and substantial reduction is US carryer capacity means full planes and less need to discount. IF you can find a ticket in the $1000 range, you should probably grab it.

Thanks for the replys. Tavelnut, I can drive to either airport as time is not an issue. We can fly into Germany or Brussels the UK etc.. and then make our way to Amsterdam in time to meet our friends who we are doing a canal Barge trip with starting on the 16th. It's one of those self driven boats that accomidates 3 couples. Did it in France a few years back and enjoyed it. Right now I am just looking for the cheapest way to get somewhere in Northwestern Europe around that time. Cost may end up being the same but will have more fun traveling in Europe whatever way than giving my Dollars to the airlines. Any suggestions?

Not quite sure what you mean by that. Was in France last spring and other than the dollar not being what is was before 2000, Europe was still the same. Does noone believe that an $700 to $800 dollar fare to Europe is available?

If you can leave from EWR, how about the other NYC airports?
I took a look and saw $786 for JFK-TXL (Berlin) for June dates on Iberia.
An airline called LTU has relatively cheap fares from JFK to German cities.
Use ITASoftware.com and other sites and keep looking.

rb... Paying $781 for a ticket is getting to be an impossible dream..Where the taxes included or you had to pay extra?
Last year I paid that amount also, but so far I cant find anything less than 1,300 dollars.I tried different cities, but the prices are the same.
I live in Texas and I need to purchase plane's tickets > SAT/AMS returning from FCO or CDG..May 28th to July 2nd.
So far BA has the cheapest fare.
However, I dont like the idea that I am not able to choose my own seat, usually I always choose Isle's seat,I want the freedom to get up and stretch my legs anytime I want.
I hope that I have better luck next year.

Recently searched LTU airlines website for a June trip. JFK to Dusseldorf (which I think is their home hub) was the cheapest to Europe I've found so far (in the $600-700 range). I didn't book yet because I am hoping for some summer specials as we get into 2007, but not many people posting here seem to share my optimism. PS I flew on LTU and it was wonderful both for crew attention and comfort, but that was 15 years ago, so can't be sure that experience is relevant today. Good luck!

Interesting to say you can drive to either Atlanta or Newark airports??? That is a long distance to cover with lots of airports in between!
US Air has a direct flight from Philadelphia to Amsterdam....
Also, Baltimore often has cheap(er) flights.

Malaysia airlines is great. Nonstop to Stockholm of our EWR - r/t fare usually $300 - $350. From Stockholm, cheap flights on all the airlines within Europe. If connections are bad, it's worth a nite in Stocklm. Center of Stockholm only 20 min with the Arlanda express.

kismet - Yes, $781 is a dream price, that is why I booked it!!! I have been looking daily (hourly?) for months and when this came up, I jumped. AND it is $781 total price including taxes. FYI - I booked directly with the airline which was cheaper than anything listed on kayak.com, mobissimo, or any of the other sites. Good luck!

Grazie rb.. Is a pity that I am not able to use my FFMiles with AA..
I have enough mileages for two tickets, but unfortunately when I decided to take my grandaughter to Europe and started looking for a flight was too late.

Oh, I hear ya. We tried using FF miles on Northwest but we got skunked. We WERE able to use them to get from the midwest, where we live, to NYC, where our daughter lives. Then we booked tickets to Rome from there. Here is a hint that worked for me. The Aerlingus website listed a fare sale to Dublin for June, so I called and told them that we needed to fly to Rome but could we get in on that fare sale to Dublin and then on to Rome. No problem, they said! Hence the low fare.
