Agghhh! Rome next week, should we go to
Hello again:
One more question, we are going to be in Rome for 5 days. I was planning a day trip to Pompeii but I'm beginning to think I would be better off taking a different day trip that's closer, easier to get to, etc. Based on your experience do you have any recommendations? For instance Ostica Antica, Frascati, Sperlonga, Pompeii, Assisi, Ostica Antica. What are your favorites. Pompeii would be very interesting but I'm not sure we are up for 3 hrs each way and then the crowds, etc. I think some beautiful scenery, small town feel, shops, a nice lunch, etc. would be a nice alternative.

We loved both Ostia Antica and Sperlonga, though they are totally different experiences. Although the Forum in Rome is fascinating, Ostia Antica was where I really felt as though I was back in ancient Rome. Seeing the tiles in the baths and the murals on the walls of the shops just wowed me.
Sperlonga is a lovely beach town perched on a hill overlooking sandy beaches. In town there's a labyrinth of pretty alleyways and little squares with cafés and shops. There are interesting sights inland, too, which could be included on a day trip - like Sermoneta and Ninfa.

Hello CMeyer and all! Thanks for the quick responses. The other 4 days look like this (still vague). Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Not sure how much is enough for each day.
Day 1: Enjoy Rome/Vatican City Tour
Maybe Pantheon same day?
Day 2: Campidoglio, Forum and Colosseum
Is that too much for one day
Shopping around?

Nina, you do not want to stay in Sperlonga the night before.
I am not sure if FCO would be closer or further away than central rome, but
By car it is about an 1 1/2 to 2 hr drive to city of Rome from Sperlonga.
and
I have taken the train from Formia which is near Sperlonga, and takes a bit over an hr.

Peanut - as I mentioned, we did not venture outside of Rome. It was our first trip but will not be the last. Here is how we spent the time: 1/2 day at Forum - we walked from our hotel on Via Veneto; wandered through the spanish steps area, went into a church or two. took a walking tour of Rome at Night. next day: colesseum, piazza poppolo, navona, pantheon; day three - st peters, vatican and vatican museums. took a tour and it took a very full day. day four - circus maximus, palatine, capitoline museum, vittorio emmanuel, st maria maggione church, day five: trevi fountain(saw it several times), villa borghese, more walking. Still felt like we missed a lot. next time, perhaps a trip outside the city.

If you go to the forum, you can hook with up a 'free' tour as we did. The young lady was from Florida and in Rome doing translation work for her master's. They wear little beige cycling type caps and I think the name was Eden Tours. the pitch at the end of the free tour is to tell you about their "for fee tours". We used the same firm/lady for the walking tour of Rome at night - it was fabulous. About $40 for the four of us. We also used them for the Vatican Museums. They leave you at the portico of St Peters where you have the option to take a 'fee tour' or 'free tour' with them through the church. The difference is that with the free tour, folks can join the group at any time. With a fee, you have a guaranteed smaller group. We opted for the fee tour of St Peters at a total cost of 12e for the four of us. Again, it was excellent. As we are not Catholic, the knowledge of the tour guide was invaluable.
