Advance purchase of train tickets in Italy
Is it possible and/or advisable to purchase train tickets that are non Eurostar in advance? If so, do we need to do it at the train station or is it possible to do it in travel agencies like American Express in Rome? Thanks for any info.

Depending on when you go may can effect the availability of tickets. In general, you can purchase tickets for local trains anytime. If you have a particular time in mind, you could by them all at one time. Otherwise get them as needed. For short trips, the local is fine, but for longer trips, the Rapido or EusroStar ES is the way to go. The highspeed non-stop ES from Rome to Florence take 60-70 minutes whereas a local can take up to 2 hours.

Non-Eurostar train tickets do not automatically come with reservations.
If you want, for an extra fee you can purchase a reservation on IC trains. If you don't reserve a seat, you'll have to search for a free one. If it's a popular train (Friday afternoon, Sunday afternoon, holiday) you may find yourself standing. You can use the ticket on any IC to your destination, but the reservation is good only on the particular train you reserved.
All other trains are open seating.
You can buy your tickets in advance if you like, at the station or any travel agancy that sells train tickets. With non-Eurostar tickets, you can get on ANY train between the two destinations that is the correct type of train (IC, D, R. . .).

Hi cruiseluv, a few weeks ago another poster here reported that the AMEX office in Venice no longer sold train tickets. That has left me wondering if the Rome AMEX still sells train tickets. But other TA's do. Your hotel can give you the closest agency to pop into if you prefer that over buying at the train station. If you do find out whether the Rome AMEX office does sell train tickets or not I hope you will post that information after you return home. Have a fun trip!

You can buy your tickets online at www.trenitalia.com up to 60 days in advance.
Look for reduced fare tickets.
