Accomodations in Amsterdam and London
Planning a Western European holiday for late July 2016, and will be grateful for hotel suggestions. I want to visit several places...but right now, Amsterdam and London are upfront in my mind.
At the moment, my trip is seven months away and I'm beginning to worry for not making any headway in these reservations. I'm a budget traveler and I've found that reserving hotels around this time (about six months advance) to be a good value, so, please help!
For Amsterdam, I've been studying the maps and hotel trending, but with so many of these bargain hotels, they seem to even out with pros and cons-I really, really need advice. What are your experiences?
Best choices for a budget of 88-100 € per night? Staying in a central location is very important to me, need ensuite bathroom, need wifi and 'want' air conditioning.
For London, the same criteria, but I'll need more information, as I've not had a chance to memorize all the areas...London is huge!

In London are you also looking for €88-€100 (£65 to £75-ish)?
That is fairly low for London but certainly doable. I'd probably start w/ travelodge.co.uk
They are modern but basic -- all are ensuites and most have a/c. Anywhere in central London will be convenient but I'd start first w/ the travelodge Covent Garden. <u>Terrific</u> location in the very center of the city and is usually below your budget for a single.

Yes, thanks, janisj! Lol, actually, Covent garden was one of the areas that I had begun to have a suspicion of being a desirable location. I will check into that.
Any other hotels? Areas?

We stayed at the Best Western Blue Tower in Amsterdam in August 2015. The room was large and clean, big enough for a queen bed and 2 large armchairs at the room wide windows. No view but plenty of light.
We ate in the restaurant one night and it was fine. They serve breakfast too but we rarely eat that meal in a hotel. Right behind the hotel is a shopping pace with a nice Italian style cafe with good coffee and an assortment of croissants, pains au chocolat etc.
Right in front of the cafe is a tram stop... our 3 day transit passes had us at Dam Square in maybe 10 minutes.
The best part was the price. Just 65 euros a night. In the past we've stayed in higher end hotels but this place is a better value for money by far. We'll be staying there again.

I looked at the hotel. It seems so nice, but pretty far away. It's best for me to stay as close to the very center when I first visit a city. I like to just walk out the door and be on the mix of things, this way I can come and go to the hotel without having to be out an extended time to make the commute worthwhile.

You could try booking.com and use one criteria as distance from the Central train station. You can bring up a map of each property and if it is inside the Keizersgracht (Emperor’s Canal) loop it will be pretty central. Inside the Herengracht canal is even better.

I like the Bloomsbury area, which is convenient for the Piccadilly line coming in from LHR. I usually stay at the Ridgemount - rooms are small but clean and comfortable, cooked breakfast. No AC. http://www.ridgemounthotel.co.uk/ Or try the Arosfa next door.
In the summer I have also stayed in one of the LSE student dorms. The Drury Lane location gets you a single with en-suite and kitchen, but can be hot as there is no AC and small windows. http://www.lsevacations.co.uk/home.aspx

@janisj - not necessarily. The Travelodge prices very depending on the night. For random dates in July I am seeing 49 GBP for a Sunday up to 150 GBP mid-week. The Ridgemount is always 75 for an en-suite single. But no AC, which is being more important.

£74 so they vary a lot. But it was only a 3 day-er so I could have missed a very high room rate just a day later.

We stayed at the Covent Garden Travelodge a couple years ago and it is a great budget hotel. As mentioned, rates vary a lot. We were there in August and got a dirt cheap rate of 39 euro for 3 people.
In Amsterdam we stayed at The Hotel The Exchange. I can't remember what we paid, but I know it was pretty cheap, and this was only a year ago. They have rooms in various price categories so you can choose what works for you.

Some travelodges can be a bit iffy, if recommended here I'd be confident but recognise the brand is bottom end. In terms of brands PremierTravelInn comes above travelodge and can be very good value dependent on dates Ibis is another middle to bottom brand which can be good value. I'd also look at yha.org.uk a posh hostel you can get single rooms at times.
My experience in Amsterdam is that the commute helps on prices, even just a commute across a canal by ferry can make a big difference.

Premier Inns are higher 'class' but the best/best located ones in London have gotten very expensive. Still worth checking though.
As for travelodges -- there are a lot of new ones and they are quite good really. (I stayed in a brand new one in Edinburgh in August and was very pleased)
I wouldn't stay at any old travelodge, but Covent Garden and a few others in central London are absolutely fine.
