Accomodation in San Sebastian during runnin of the bulls

Hello. Does any have suggestions for accomodation during the running of the bulls festival. We have heard staying in San Sebastian is a good option. We plan on being there for about two days to see the festivities. I know people plan far in advance for this time of year, but any suggestions would be great. We are open to hostels for 1-3 star hotels.
Thanks for your help.
Susan

We just returned from www.hostalbahia.com and though it was a nice place, excellent value.

Do you have the Basque country PDF from www.maribelsguides.com (I hope)?

Best wishes,

Rex

Another question.... how did you find the beaches. Are they crowded or is it possible to find some space?
thx

I was in San Sebastian on May 30, on an overcast day. Not one person on La Concha beach. At Getaria, with the sun out about 3 or 4 pm, while we had late lunch near the fishing harbor, we saw two kids and one bronzed, Speedo-ed (60-yr old?) guy on an adjacent beach.

At Biarritz, the following night, near sunset (about 9 pm), we saw one beginning surfer in full wet suit (never did get up).

You were expecting Cancun, or Waikiki?

Perhaps it picks up in a few weeks.

Sure in July there will be more people especially if the weather gets hotter than it is now But anyway, San Sebastian is not a beach resort like the ones here at the Mediterranean. It's a northern city with a beach, it's a big difference though it seems the same thing )

One further thought for SusanMac... or anyone else...

...this is both one of the good things and simultaneously, bad things about this forum. You have my current favorable recommendation/impression - - one person (though I like to think that I have enough experience to give a cogent report on lodging) - - and as a result, might be dissuaded from doing your own research.

On the other hand, you did say you downloaded the PDF from Maribel - - so, I'll suggest one or more additional steps you might take, by proposing that you look at www.sansebastianturismo.com - - between that and Maribel's guide, I probably looked at 2-4 dozen places to stay in SS and vicinity. For what it's worth, I encountered at least two other places that looked to be quite comparable to Hostal Bahia - - but had no vacancy (about 12-14 days out).

I had my own criteria (price, location, features) and they may not be the same as yours.

Thanks Rex. I am continuing my research. I emailed Hostal Bahia for rates. We will be there the first week of July and they gave me a rate of 95 euro anight for a double w/breakfast. Not so sure about this, although I know it is a popular time. I will keep searching I think. What would you rate this hotel. My husband and I are simple people as long as a place is clean it doesn't matter too much to us.
As for the beach situation I just wanted to know if I would be lounging in the sun almost touching the person next to me. I hate that about some places in the Med. We were just in Kauai for our honeymoon last month and were spoiled with our own privacy! I just wanted to prepare myself. Not sure if your ever prepared for a bronzed speedo'd 60 yr old however!
Thanks again.

We got 69 euros w/brkfst, and I thought it was a very good value. Curiously, this is lower than any rate posted on the sansebastianturismo website for them (maybe also lower than their own website?)

At 95, I say you might rate it a fair-to-mediocre value. I can think of nothing negative to say about it. Room perhaps smallish? The parking was a separate 14.50 euro if you are coming by car (in a garage, one block away, open 0700-2400)

The other palces I investigated (by e-mail, buy found no vacancy) were Hostal La Concha and Hostal Alemana. Pension Aida (recommended by Maribel, and has some good points, but we didn't like the location nearly as well) made a reservation for us, and then politely canceled it (at my request) when we found Bahia.

They are www.pensionesconencanto.com

See also http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34632041 for some additional details - - Pension Aida is quite close to Hotel Record, I think.

Are you talking about "San Fermin" festival in Pamplona?

I assume that Susan IS indeed asking about San Fermin - - didn't sound surprising to me that Pamplona would have few-to-none available rooms, and that many people drive in/visit for the day from San Sebastian. I bet that even SS gets very high occupancy and adds a premium at that time of year.

Yes, this is the Festival in question. It does seem SS gets a lot of tourists during this time as it shows in the price of hotels I've seen so far. I am still plugging away with the advice given. Maybe we'll just stay less days in SS. We're driving from our apartment in Paris so I'm trying to talk my husband into stopping some other places during the week. Any suggestions? Bordeaux sp? is on my list and I think hubby said Tours?

You may find it extremely difficult traveling from Donostia-San Sebastian to Pamplona for the fiesta if you are planning on going during the first couple of days. We heard yesterday that the bus is fully booked for the opening. The same with the train.

Robert,
I have travelled from Bilbao to Pamplona just for the Friday night, and what they did was to add buses depending on the people who were arriving into the bus station. A bit like a shuttle, and it was the same coming back home from Pamplona in the morning. I suppose they do the same with the buses to and from San Sebastian, although maybe itīs just a Friday and Saturday thing ...
