Any suggestions on where to stay in Venice and Rome that is 3 star - clean and good value........in Venice close to St Mark's Square and in Rome close to Trevi Fountain.

It is located in the Trastevere, not close to the Trevi but great location, I highly recommend
the Arco del lauro , bed and breakfast which at the end of the day is like a small hotel with very few rooms.

If you are referring to the official Italian hotel rating system, which 3-star features are you looking for? It's possible that a 2-star has all the features you need for less money.

In Italy, features that are required in a 3-star hotel include bar service, receptionists must speak at least one foreign language (maybe Albanian?), reception must be open 16 hours a day, hotel staff must wear a uniform, and every room must have a private bath and internet service.

Note that a 2-star hotel might or might not have some or all of these features, they just are not required to.

You won't find breakfast at Arco del Lauro in Rome. Although I found the accommodation there fine, I wouldn't say that it was convenient. I didn't like having to walk out a block for my morning coffee and roll. They give a voucher and you must walk down to the local cafe. I especially would not recommend it for someone wanting to be in the Trevi area, or for a first time visitor to Rome. No desk, not much help getting around, with reservations, etc. It was fine for us, but we have been to Rome several times. I would not recommend it to a client that was on a first time visit.

What about Hotel Parlamento in Rome? It is a fairly popular 2* pretty close to the Trevi fountain.

I stayed at the Locanda Al Leon in Venice this past summer. Clean, breakfast, shower, A/C, near St. Mark's, and around E70 / night single. No elevator, but since you're walking over all those bridge anyway...

For a wonderful place it is the Hotel Aberdeen in Rome-in all of the guidebooks,great things on Tripadvisor,etc. It is located on Via National and the metro stop is Piazza del Repubblica.There are many transportation options there to get all over Rome(metro,bus,walk and cab) and the hotel staff are wonderfully helpful.It is located on Via Torino across from the police station and near the opera house. It is a 3 star and is quite popular so may be hard to get into.

Venice-if you don't want to actually stay on the island because of price or leaving early for the airport,etc. I would definitely chose the Hotel Bologna (Best Western)in Mestre which is directly across from the train station(about 80 cents) over the lagoon (about 8 minutes) to San Marco. It is soooooooo easy and the views are great.The hotel itself has a wonderful breakfast buffet and the room we had as a quad for our family was huge!The price we got was great and it was nice not having to hassle with trying to get a water taxi early in the morning for the airport. Just a suggestion?

If you're staying at least 3 nights in Venice here's an apartment we stayed in just around the corner from St. Marks but in a quiet location. Unless you need front desk assistance, I would highly recommend it. Cute small balcony overlooking a side canal with gondolas gliding by. 160E per night
