Unpasturized brie! and other smelly yummy cheeses, French wine that isn't sold in the US...good French food served by good French waiters in a great atmosphere .. I know, they have French restaurants here too, but somehow they just aren't the same --perfumes- brands and scents not sold in the US, I think of Paris whenever I use the perfumes I got there -all French women wear perfume.Poilane bread, hot chocolate from Laduree, the best pate compagne,oh boy, somebody stop me! Candace
Jennifer is correct, many if not all
of the sold-in-France versions of
French perfumes have different formulas than those exported to the US.
I have been told this myself by
perfume salespeople in the US, as well as in Paris. Plus, I know from my favorite brands that those I've bought in Paris are stronger and persist longer. Some of the cosmetics, like
Lancome, have different formulas as well.
Candace - I do not have any documented proof. I have learned this through conversations through perfume clerks here in the US and in Paris. It has something to do with the fact that the French use potatoes in their perfume production and the US will not allow the import of such products due to the pasturizing (weird, I know, but this is what I've been told). I am by no means a perfume expert, but I know from personal experience that French perfume is much more to my taste and you can't find anything like it here in the US.

All kinds of neat stuff - Paris is a shopper's paradise.

Elvira, funny you should mention Badoit. I finally got around to putting our vacation pictures from last Spring in an album and, low and behold, there's a great snap of our cafe table in Sancerre with a bottle of badoit on it, and a bottle of wine in the clear cooler. It sure made me wish I was back there.

Randy, have you purchased anything from that perfume website? You wouldn't be advertising something here, now would you? ;-)

I've heard about the perfume thing, too!

As for other things in paris, I love the unpasteurized cheeses and the pates available. The variety of mustards. The selection of wines--even French table wine is better! Cute shoes. Cute men (OK you can't buy those). I'm sitting here drawing a blank because the list is just too long!!
