A good bakery in Brussels?

We are going to be in Brussels in August for five days. We will be having a celebration there and we want a cake made for the event. Can anyone recommend a good bakery that makes cakes to order?

Thanks!!

For pastries, Wittamer is a popular choice (for chocolate too), but we prefer Fabrice Collignon

If you are interested in them, contact them ASAP - there's always the chance that they will be on holiday in August. Also, how many people are you talking about? I don't think they handle really large orders. FC is up in "our" neighbourhood in Ixelles - while you're wandering the Chaussee de Waterloo, check out the cafes and restaurants. Much better than the tourist standards around the Grand'Place.

Wittamer is on the Sablon. http://www.wittamer.com/en/house/index.php

You could also try the pastry department at Rob Gourmet Market, our favourite grocery store in Brussels:

(Some people, like me, still call them by their old name, Rob's Fine Food)

Also, cupcakes are trendy in Europe at the moment - another bakery offering cupcakes seems to pop up every few weeks. http://www.lescupcakesdemilie.be/fr/page2-01.htm

Thank you so much for the tips. There are only 8 of us, so it would be a small order. I will contact all three places. I really appreciate it!!!

Any good-sized patisserie should have something that could feed six, possibly eight (small slices) or you could get two of the full size cakes (maybe one chocolate, one fruit).

The only place I don't recommend is Teddy on the Avenue Louise (between the Place Louise and Place Stephanie) and on the rue de Bailli in Ixelles. Very mediocre.

Enjoy!

Thanks!!! I got a reply from Wittamer, so far. More expensive than I'd hoped, but we'll see what the others say.

Wittamer is one of the patisseries favoured by the Belgian royal families and it's on the Sablon, so high prices aren't surprising.

Ah, I see. Maybe we'll live it up and be like royalty for a day.

It depends if you just want a nice cake - or rather a "themed" birthday cake.

There a nice cakes in many places in Brussels, but only a few places for themed cakes.

I got Wittamer to make a Space themed cake for my husbands birthday. There was a little Tintin, a rocket, a moon look about it. It was nice but not "out of this world". The cake was for about 15 people and it cost me about 150 euros!

I'd just go for the nice cake, rather than the themed cake.

Have you tried Au Vatel on Place Jourdan? One of my favourite bakeries in Brussels. Lovely cakes, and definitely less expensive than Wittamer...
