5 days/4 nights to pop over to Turkey - please help!

My boyfriend is visiting me in London and we'll have 5 days/4 nights to spend in Turkey. We would love more but that is all that work will allow me to have off. So I need your help!

We have always wanted to see Istanbul but we would also like a couple of days of sun, swim and relaxation. Bodrum has been recommended to me as a place I'd love, but I don't know if it's possible if we spent a day and night in Istanbul first. Are there nice beach towns closer to Istanbul? Is something like this possible if we fly to Istanbul/fly out from Bodrum?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi. Just returned from Istanbul and I can only suggest that you save an entire day for Topkapi. I was there many years ago and the place is huge (which I forgot). Don't know anything about Bodrum.

You could get away from the bustle of Istanbul by going to the Princess Islands, which you can reach by ferry from Istanbul. I don't think they offer exactly the "sun and swim" beach environment you're looking for, but they would be a peaceful and interesting side trip.

Istanbul is so large, diverse and interesting, I wouldn't want to spend time elsewhere on such a short, first trip.

We were very disappointed when we visited Bodrum last July. Town is full of shops that sell gold, jeans and pocketbooks to the large package tour groups that wander through. The castle is an interesting place to visit, and we enjoyed our private boat tour of the coastline, but other than some excellent food, we could have been in any nondescript city along the water.

Istanbul, on the other hand, was fantastic. Can't wait to go back. But I'd definitely look for other recommendations on where to spend a few days to relax in the sun.

IMHO, one day in Istanbul is barely enough to get settled in your hotel and have a quick look at the neighborhood. If the beach is your priority then I'd focus on that. Bodrum is a popular resort - have a look at www.turkeytravelplanner.com for info.

You can either choose to fly Dalaman and transfer 30 min top Fethiye for beach vacation or if you choose Bodrum you choose districts like Torba and few nice beachfront hotels are available.
Airport to Torba is about 45 min.drive.
By using domestic flights you can split your days efficiently.

In winter you could also do long weekends to Istanbul and easyjet is a good option to do so.
Happy travelling,
Murat
