an obvious route would be via Munich - Salzburg to Vienna - also most direct probably.

For lots of great info on trains check www.seat61.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com (check their online train guide for suggested itineraries) and www.ricksteves.com.

Actually with that limited time I'd head to Munich - stay there for the whole time and then take a direct train to Vienna.

Dachau is an easy day trip by S-Bahn + bus - you could day trip to so many other neat places, and Munich itself has lots of nice things.

You really do not have time for much more than one stop.

One option is the overnight train. It leaves Frankfurt at 8 minutes past midnight and arrives in Vienna at 8:19. See http://www.enjoy-europe.com/night-trains-in-europe.htm for a brief review of night trains.

But OP is looking for 5 days in between Frankfurt and Vienna not overnight train- but they could spend 5 days in the Rhine/Mosel area and Heidelberg then get that night train to Vienna via Munich.
