3-4 week italy tour

3-4 week italy tour
My husband and I are planning a trip to Italy this October spending anywhere between 3/4 weeks. This is where we would like to visit, we have to include sometime in Sicily since we have family there. Venice, Bologna, Parma, Cinque Terre, Florence, Sienna, Umbria, Rome, Amalfi, Sicily. Any Itinerary suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Especially how many days in each and the best ways to travel throughout. We are active, dont' mind trains, busses or driving

That is a big order. First, decide how many nites you will spend in Italy--only then can you plan well.
Then I would look at air connections--flying open jaw into Venice and home from Rome. Once you have these facts you can start to plan specifics for itinerary---not until.
Sicily demands at least a week if you are going that far---we did 15 days. Here are some pics you may enjoy.

That is exactly what I was thinking as far as flying into Venice and out of Rome. We plan on spending about 6 /7nights in Sicily. I'm concerned about a base in the Tuscany Region, and whether or not we should stay in Florence or someplace outside to tour the Tuscany region.

Part of your itinerary will depend on timing. If you're talking late Oct I would bag the Amalfi Coast since hotels and restaurants will be starting to shut down, ferry schedules will be much reduced (or stopped by bad weather) and a beach resort off season isn't really a lot of fun.
Also consider Tuscany. While cities are fund despite the weather - if it's getting cold, and days are getting shorter (esp late Oct) the countryside can start to get boring.
I would start in Venice, rent a car when you leave, go as far as Rome and drop the car. Then fly to Sicily for your visit there - and return home.
