2 rooms for Family of 5 in Germany?

We are traveling to Germany mid November 2011 with 3 kids, 2 Adults, Kids are 12,10,8.
We never book 2 rooms for the five of us - anywhere in the US. I have been looking to book rooms in Germany in Dusseldorf, the Castle Road area and Munich. Will most places be okay with us all in one room? Do I just need to plan on booking 2? I hate to split up the family and pay for two if it's not necessary. What about B & B's? I have looked into apartments and quad rooms where I can find them. Thanks!

In mid-November, you should not have any difficulty to find rooms that fit your needs. I suggest, for the first city of your stay, you contact the tourist information office from home in the apprpriate destination city, by e-mail, fax or phone. (Look up their website.)Describe what you are looking for, in what part of the city(in Dussendorf or Munich)and let them make suggestions and even the reservations. After that, simply contact the next place from your stay in Germany.

My wife and I have frequently just shown up at the local tourist info. office before 4PM and have always found a suitable place to stary. Because of snoring, etc. we always require 2 rooms; no problem.

Keep in mind that, by German law, if you cancel a reservation, the host can keep some or all of your deposit or charge you an (often not insubtantial) amount for the cancellation (Stornierung in German)

You do not need a quad room - there are 5 of you - not 4. You should look for famiy rooms and make clear the ages of the children - so they don't think they can put in cots for infants or toddlers.

I am a little confused...do you mean that you usually get a room with two double beds and add an extra bed for the third child? That setup is much more common in the U.S. than in Europe, and hotel rooms in Europe, including Germany, generally tend to be smaller than in the U.S. With luggage and extra beds, I can't imagine squeezing 5 people into the vast majority of rooms I've stayed in. Most "family" rooms have space for 3 or 4 people at most. I was 12 and my brother was 14 when my parents took us on our first trip to Europe (France/Switzerland/Germany) and they always booked us our own room, usually right next to theirs. It might be a lot more comfortable for all of you if the older kids get their own room.

one alternative is connecting rooms - many hotels have those if you ask. we have often used those when we have travelled with our kids, particularly when they were younger.
