1 day in the Black Forest

Hi

If you only had a 1 day in the black forest (I know, very short, but a taste is better than none) where would you recommend?

We're coming from Zurich and using public transport.

Thanks
Rellie

The Black Forest is beautiful in many ways. Are you looking for a city or a lovely spot, a castle?

What do you enjoy doing? You only have one day, please be specific.

What public transportation are you using? So we'll be more prepared to help you.

I'm actually not too sure about what to see. Probably small towns with some scenery and a castle.

We'd prefer to stay away from the bigger cities. We do enjoy scenery and hopefully not spend too much time at the very touristy places.

We're happy to go via train and we haven't ruled out hiring a car for the day from Freiburg (return) if that means we can see some hidden, more out of the way places.

You do not need a car if you want a glimpse of the Black Forest in one day! Get on the train in Freiburg, travel to Offenburg (one hour,) and switch trains there for a ride on the Black Forest Railway, one of Germany's most scenic train routes. Bigtyke mentioned Gengenbach - it's a beautiful town a few minutes outside Offenburg, one of several places you can stop. You can also stop in Haslach, or Gutach (home of the Vogtsbauernhof open-air Museum, wonderful place,) or some of the other towns named at the web page below.

Use the Baden-Württemberg ticket day pass for this trip. It's €28 for two adults for a whole day of travel (any time on weekends, after 9 am on weekdays) using the regional and local trains.
