I'm curious what the French word or phrase for bubble-wrap is.
It's excellent for protecting a bottle of wine in a suitcase, but hard to explain knowing no French.

I just received a package today. It had both styrofoam peanuts and bubble wrap. All in the trash now. I used to save bubble wrap for years until I realized that I had absolutely no use for it. (Like kwren, I have always rolled up fragile items in my clothes when traveling.)

You didn't ask, but I prefer these to bubble wrap:

My reason is, if the bottle breaks, the bubble wrap won't contain the liquid, but a Wine Skin will.
That said, I don't usually use a Wine Skin, I just tuck the bottle into the center of the suitcase and surround it with dark clothing. Never had anything break.

"Have you ever had an oily or red stainy fragile item break when it was wrapped in your clothes?"
Any "oily or red stainy" items are sealed in 2 or 3 ziplock bags before packing them. I'd think even a sky-is-falling Fordorite might realize most of us are at least that bright.

Quick note about ziplocs: if you wash and reuse them, as I do, be aware that they develop invisible holes and can therefore leak. I am sad to say that, because I hate throwing anything even remotely reusable away, but on my last trip I had a bottle of liquid vitamin supplement leak inside AND outside my ziploc. Most vexing.
