Hey there, i need some help. We are thinking of taking an Alaskan cruise and have never been on a cruise before. I've spent lots of time looking at different ships and now think we would defiantly prefer a smaller "luxury" one. However... we have a 2 year old and a 1 year old. The purpose of this trip is to spend lots of time with our little ones while doing something my husband and I would enjoy, so we aren't looking for anything with babysitters etc. And they are too little to enjoy anything the "kid" friendly ships offer it sounds like. My question is, is it inappropriate to take babies on the nicer ships? Do ppl do that? Please give me your thoughts. Thanks!

We've been on several upscale luxury cruise where there were a couple of passengers with toddlers so, yes, people do that all the time. Just remember, there won't really be anything to amuse your kids while "on board" except you and your spouse since that type of cruise is not normally geared to families with children as young as yours.
You also have to be mindful of the other passengers who will not be as enamored with your children as you are so plan on "dining early" and when you are in the common areas of the ship if your your kids get cranky don't ignore them. Instead, take appropriate action to make sure your children do not disturb the tranquility of the other guests - after all they've paid as much or more than you to enjoy the cruise.
In other words, if you use common sense and are respectful of others you'll all have an enjoyable time.
I am way past taking little kids any where, but I do remember that being locked up in a small space with infants or toddlers was anything but fun. As an older person now, I do find that I resent people imposing their children on me unecessarily. Especially since most young parents follow the anything goes theory of discipline. Best bet - a luxury condo at the beach.
Isn't that what Disney cruises are for?
Disney has a ship that cruise Alaska now, with Glacier Bay National Park in its itinary. Should look into it.
So much depends on you. If you are in good control of your little ones, if you take them back to your cabin if you sense a tantrum coming on, there should be happiness all around. The fact that you are concerned with the other passengers on your cruise tells me you will do a good job and will have a great cruise. I wish we could have cruised with our daughter when she was young. We couldn't afford it until last year when she was 39, married, with a child of her own. I hope you and your family have lots of great travel experiences ahead.
