Shore excursions in Juneau

What is a must to see and do? Is it best to book with the cruiseline?

The highlight of my trip to Juneau was the Salmon Bake dinner at the end of the day. They take you by bus up into the mountains and you have the best salmon I have ever eaten. Since it was at the end of the day, you have the whole morning and afternoon for sightseeing. It is usually cheaper to book on your own than to go through the cruise lines but you should make a few phone calls and check on prices.

we took a converted school bus for $5 pp, each way to the Mendenhall Glacier, then came back to town to shop around and go to the Red Dog Saloon. The bus is usually in the parking lot by the ship.

Great day

How about Whale Watching? Is it best to book with Princess or book directly with another company?

Our favorite excursion in Juneau was what Princess called the "four glacier helicopter tour". We were traveling with my parents and so the four of us were the only ones in the helicopter with the pilot. She flew us over a variety of glaciers and then we landed on one and got out to walk around for quite some time. No one else landed anywhere near us. it was absolutely wonderful and worth the cost. I don't know about booking it on your own. My theory has generally been that I might be able to save a little booking on my own, but the ease of being able to book on line ahead of time and then just show up is worth it.

I never book ship tours and always go direct with the venders. All of the above possible. BUT there are way too many Must does for Alaska, so better would be to look over a shore excursion list and narrow down your interests, determine your budget and report. My top choices are the glacier helicopter landings.

Is there any dog sled tour of the glacier that doesn't involve a helicopter ride?

The above reply is for the cruise season, of course if you go in the winter, plenty of dog sledding options. I have done it 3 times including a "dog sledding" school.

I have gone with Orca Enterprises many times, including an upcoming double trip in May. They offer an excellent adventure.

I have also gone with Capt Larry of Orca Enterprises twice. Nice trips. both saw whales, once in early June and again in early Sep. 42' jetboat, 23 passengers. One of the most recommended tours I have seen in 4 yrs on boards.
