Shore Excursions

Will be taking the Constellation this spring on the Southern Caribbean route (Barbedos, St. Lucia, St. Thomas)..traveling with kids ages 11 and 13. Should we take the ship's shore excusions or explore the islands on our own? Would appreciate any advice.

We took our two teenage daughters on that same itinerary last spring and we arranged all our own tours. Go the the web and search for those islands. You'll see a lot of links for private excursions. We took a four wheeler jungle tour in St. Lucia that was the hightlight of the trip. Barbados, we hired a taxi for the day for $125 for all four of us and he took us to all the tourist attractions before any of the cruise tours got there. They know the schedule and can do that if you ask. St. Thomas has many alternatives all doable by yourself. Taxi to Megans Bay, shopping downtown, snorkeling at Coki Beach.

Peter

We went to the same islands recently. In St. Lucia I would recommend jungletourstlucia.com They have a jeep, it is an all day trip. There are several tours to choose from. Ours was $75.00pp. Included a decent lunch, excursions to the volvanos etc. A good value for the money. You will see the real St. lucia. Barbados in easy to do on your own. We went to a wonderful beach, about 20 minutes from the ship. In the terminal when you dock, there are many to choose from at the time. St. Thomas we went to Megens Bay on our own. There are taxi's everywhere. Doing it yourself will save you bundles. Have fun.

Do it yourself. In Barbados we took a taxi to the Atlantis submarine. Beat the excursion people there and our sub wasn't crowded. Then took a taxi to that same close beach probably. They had water trikes. Great for kids. In St. Lucia we took a taxi in two different directions for a total of $40 in l999. Girls would like the Batik factory where clothing is painted with wax then dyed. Can't remember the name but, it will be written in the list of shore excursions. Beat the excursion there. Had our own private demonstration. No crowd in the fitting rooms. Then headed the opposite direction to Reduit(pronounced Redwee)Beach where we walked through the open lobby of a beautiful hotel and used their beach. In St. Thomas there is Magens Bay, Coki Beach or Sapphire Beach. All nice. Darlene

We booked with Tiami Tallships for their 5 hour catamaran sail and snorkel. It was wonderful. We were greeted with champaign mimosas, unlimited, beverages through out the day, a delicious lunch served on china, good snorkeling spots and the sail was a lot a fun. A very uncrowded catamaran. The price was $65 USD. Well worth it.
