Need tour guide suggestions for Med Cruise this summer
My husband & I are still planning our Med. excursions and just read in a Travel & Leisure magazine that they recommended NOT traveling in "groups" for safety's sake and to do a private tour guide.<BR> Do you have any suggestions a private tour guide for the following ports (and also if you believe it would even be better to do on our own)<BR>- Monte Carlo (to include Eze and maybe Nice)<BR>- Pisa (and as foodies, would love to venture a bit to the sea north for a lovely lunch or to go in a bit inland to avoid the crowds and do some food tastings)<BR>- Naples (Pompei & I hear the Naples Nat'l Museum where all the artifacts are stored). As it is hi season, feel that going to Capri, etc. would be too much stress & would rather make that a trip in its own)<BR>- Athens<BR>- Instanbul<BR>- Kusadasi (this may change)<BR><BR>Thank you so much!<BR>

Pam - I would do your own excursions and save yourself the price of your next cruise.<BR><BR>If you are porting in Monte Carlo, getting to Eze or Nice is as easy as going to the train station and getting off seven minutes later in "new" Eze and taking a bus up to "old" Eze. Nice is another 20 minutes or so south from Eze. All of this will cost you less than $50 for the two of you including the taxi to get to and from the train station in Monte Carlo.<BR><BR>Livorno to Pisa by train takes twenty minutes each way and will cost less than $35 for two including taxi both ways from port to station. Many walk from the station to the Tower (40 to 50 minutes each way) but those who want to go on to Florence take a taxi. That will add another $25 to the trip. If you're going on to Florence, the train station there is at most a ten block walk to anything you'd want to see.<BR><BR>Naples - Pompeii is easy by train or some take a hydrofoil to Sorrento for its quaintness (Amalfi coastline) and then train to Pompeii. Actually, Capri is the easiest trip from Naples as the hydrofoil stations are right next to your ship. Once at the marina in Capri, take the funicular up the mountain to the shops area and then a bus on to anacapri if you're so inclined. Really a very easy day.<BR><BR>Peter

Pam 123-<BR><BR>Just one word of caution on the trains in Italy- they go on strike at a moment's notice and you do not want to get stuck somewhere and have to attempt to get back to your cruise ship on your own--- as the ship sails without you, if you are not back by departure time...<BR><BR>This is just a head's up on the train situation...as a friend of mine was supposed to go from Nice to Rome and ended up changing a vacation because the trains went on strike right as she was in LINE buying her tkts....

I'm not sure what Andy's problem is. I've followed his posts on this forum for a few months now and sometimes he gives good advice. He has certainly travelled extensively and even appears to be one of those "don't need to work" types.<BR><BR>But then there are other times he just wants to scare people. Like this remark above. Do trains stike in Italy on a moments notice? - yes. Does that keep Italians from using their massive train system to get to work or school everyday? No. When there's a strike, is it system wide? No - very rarely. Did his friend get stranded by a train strike once? Probably. Are there ten thousand other people every day who don't get stranded by a train strike in Italy? Yes.<BR><BR>Pam - don't let Andy scare you into paying several hundred dollars for an easy train trip in Italy because you're scared to miss your ship. It just doesn't happen very often. I would venture that you have a better chance of getting hit by a car (or vespa) in Rome while you're sightseeing than miss your train back. Does this mean you should never cross a street?
