1st cruise - any leave from NY?

Hello,

I think I've finally convinced my husband to go on a cruise (we're almost 30). He's afraid of being out at sea so we thought a short cruise would be best (4-5 days.)

We'd rather avoid having to fly somewhere first and I've been hearing that cruises are now starting to leave from NY. Problem is, which ones actually leave from NY? Which cruise lines?

Crossing my fingers that this will actually happen

Thanks!
Betsey

Many cruises leave from NY. Some down the coast, some to spain, Italy etc...

Carnival, Princess, Cunard, Holland America, Norwegian....and more leave from New Nork. You have many options good luck!

They leave from Brooklyn too?!?!?

Wow, either NYC or Brooklyn would work fine.

If you go to any of the online cruise travel agency websites, you can search for cruises using lots of different criteria, including length of cruise and departure port.

Both Carnival and Royal Caribbean have 5 days cruises that leave from and return to one of the NY area ports.

In the fall of 2004 we cruised to the Caribbean on the RCL Voyager, a gorgeous ship, which we chose specifically because it left from NY and we didn't need to fly anywhere. RCL provided a bus from Hartford directly to the pier, and the entire procedure was painless. More specifically, it's Port Liberty, NJ (not NY, although it's NY Harbor). It is my understanding that HAL's Noordam has quite a few cruises departing from that port. Good luck, and happy cruising!

Princess has cruises from Brooklyn (Red Hook) but they are longer then 4-5 days.

Other cruises use Manhattan pier.

I would really look for a 7 nighter - 4-5 night cruises don't really give the whole cruise experience. Just pick one with lots of ports. I did a fall foliage last year and we only had one sea day and was in port the other days. We were only at sea when we slept and ate dinner (and the last day). There is so much to do on the ship, he will never be bored!

Good luck.

Afraid of rough seas and leaving from NYC? My experience has been that the Atlantic is where one is most likely to feel motion. NYC to Bermuda is an example. Furthermore, unless you leave in the summer, you're inclined to be in cold/cool weather thus not being able to avail yourself of deck activities or the balcony outside your room. While NYC may be most convenient, you would avoid these negatives by going out of Ft Lauderdale to the Bahamas in mid to late spring. (Bahamas have similar weather to the Carolinas.)

Another consideration is the short cruise. The first day doesn't count because you have to go to the lifeboat drill, unpack and find your way around the ship. The last day is over by 9 a.m. as you are whisked off the ship. You will get a better feel for cruising on a 7 day trip.

I recommend the Panama Canal transit, southern or western caribbean trips. Destinations are important, but so is the cruiseline. Choose carefully. Cheapest isn't always the best. There's a reason for cheap fares - season, location on ship, etc. My
forthcoming cruise (26th) is from Japan to China. We've gone around the world three times and have done everything inbetween. We love cruising and you will too.

My husband & I took our first cruise on our 15th anniversary ( 5yrs ago) to Bermuda out of New York harbor. It was great , and Bermuda is beautiful. Also, more affordable than flying and staying there. Check out Bermuda, you would love it!!

You would enjoy cruising. It really is wonderful. We just returned on HAL's Noordam on Saturday, April 15. We had one day of swells but for the most part, the seas were calm. When talking to one of the gift shop personnel, she said that this was the calmest the seas had been since the maiden voyage. Leaving from New York on the maiden voyage, they had 40ft swells. Some people love this, and others DON'T!!!!If you aren't used to it, you might want to consider leaving from Florida. The Noordam does either 10 or 11 days to the Caribbean from New York, but right now it's on it's way to Europe for the summer. RCCL sends a larger ship to Bermuda for, I believe, five days. A larger ship can handle the waves better than say, the Horizon or Zenith (which are Celebrity's oldest ships).

Is your husband afraid of flying or cruising? I would take a minimum of 7 days for my first cruise. You want calm, go to Florida or the Caribbean.

Suerich, I enjoyed the Noordam very much. She's a beautiful ship. We thought the food was good, not great, but I really believe this decline is industry wide. After 20+ cruises, I'm one of those people who can say, "I remember when...." Unfortunately my husband hurt his back three days into the cruise and spent a few days in bed. When I went get a wheelchair to get him out of the room, I was told that it would be $200-$300 for the three days, depending on the size of the chair we needed. I thought that this was a bit excessive. I don't know what the policy is on other lines. Has anybody else had this problem? Needless to say, it left a sour taste in mouth.

K,

How about the ship's dr.? He dined w/us on a few nights. Was he just a piece of work?

We thought that the food & service were a tad better on our Zuiderdam cruise last summer.

We live close to Boston but chose to go on Celebrity Cruise Line so we drove to Bayonne, NJ where we sailed on Celebrity's Zennith to Bermuda--We loved Celebrity so much --we are-booked Celebrity to Europe. Once your hubby gets over the (I'll be bored--closter phobic and anyn other excuse) he'll love it and will probably want to be the one to suggest going again---If you guys golf and love beaches--You will really love Bermuda--pricey golf but beautiful--ENJOY

We are leaving on RCI's Explorer out of Port Liberty in June. Its a 9 day Eastern Caribbean with 2 days at sea on either end. Two days to relax and get into the caribbean mode and two days to relax on the way home before rejoining the rat race!
