Where to vacation with 4 20 year old boys?
Wife wants to go to Mex or Caribbean next summer with our 4 kids--all in their early 20's..and all boys.
Wife wants beach/boys want things to do and to be kept busy. I don't want wild night life type town and I want a fun family vacation. WIfe does NOT want an all inclusive property. I think an AI is the way to go, especially with 20 year olds.
We want to spend 4-7 days away.
I'm thinking Puerto Vallarta and possibley Cabo San Lucas. Cancun has been ruled out, so please don't recommend that.
Any good ideas?

Personally, I don't think that your 20-somethings will have a good time at an all-inclusive. I happen to like AIs (I'm in my mid-30s and part of a couple), but it seems like they are attended mostly by couples or families with young children. I think your boys will be bored because they won't meet anyone, which is probably pretty important to them.
How about Belize? I visited in March and thought it was wonderful. There are so many active pursuits (cave tubing, snorkeling, Mayan ruins, hiking) that your sons would never get bored. You can split your time between the mainland and the island of Ambergris Caye. It's really a unique experience and should be fairly affordable in the summer.

FluffnFold, please share more information about Belize. Husband and I have free air miles on US Air and can only get away around Xmas. Would like some info on possibly renting a condo on a beach with decent restaurants and night life. We are in our 40's but like lots of diversions, activities, choices. Your advice?

We went to Aruba when our son was 19 and an 18 yr. old pal of his went with us. The beaches are fine, many good restaurants in town at reasonable prices, cabs are fairly priced and there is night life if they want it. Also plenty of excursions available as well. There is a WW II sunken German freighter that is basically an artifical reef for snorkelers.

I, too, used free USAir tickets to Belize. The service was pretty good. We flew through Charlotte from PA and the plane was rather empty, even in March.
You definitely won't be bored in Belize. We spent the first three nights in Belize City so that we could do activities on the mainland. We flew to Tikal, Guatemala one day, which I highly recommend if the Mayan sites interest you. As less costly options, there are many excellent Belize sites as well, but we felt that Tikal would be the most impressive.
We also cave tubed at Jaguar Paw Lodge. The jungle hike and being completely isolated while at that lodge was just as much of an experience as the tubing. The lodge was quite pretty, but definitely isolated, and I would have been scared to death to stay there. Belize City worked out just fine for us.
We then flew to Ambergris Caye for the beach part of our vacation. There are lots of condo-tels where you can get more space (separate bedroom and kitchen) at a great value. We stayed on the north end at Belizean Shores, which we liked quite a bit. Staying north of the cut/channel may not appeal to all, though. You are very isolated because you can reach the north end only by the water, but we loved it. The better restaurants seemed to be in the north, so that helped to make our decision. We don't mind eating in for breakfast and/or lunch, but a more gourmet dinner is a prerequisite for us. We didn't care that we couldn't go out in the evenings in San Pedro, we just wanted to relax.
There are lots of water activities on Ambergris. We snorkeled for the first time ever (even though we always vacation on an island) and thought it was great. You can also rent bikes and ride the island, or better yet, a golf cart since cars are really few and far between (and none on the north end at all). It's a novel and unique place.
If you want to know more, just ask! This was one of my favorite vacations ever (second only to my honeymoon in Moorea, Tahiti) and I loved to talk about it!
