Ways to tour St. Lucia?

Hi,

Going to the Sandals Grande in April. While we rarely leave a resort, we know we want to see St. Lucia as we have heard so many nice things about it. We are more interested in the natural sights (rainforrest etc.) than seeing Castries or another town. Question, what is the best way to do this. Rent a car?, Pay a cab driver? Take an organized tour? I seem to feel paying a cab driver for the day may be our best option so we can choose where to go and have someone who knows their way around doing so. Any feedback would be appreciated, also what I should expect to pay.

Thanks
Paul

I'd recommend that you hire a private guide for exploring the island. (Local taxi driver, etc) St. Lucia is a beautiful island, and if you're staying on the north part of the island you should definitely plan to go south to see the Pitons. Maybe drinks and dinner at Dasheen Restaurant at Ladera Resort to watch the sunset after spending a day touring the rain forest and botanical gardens and waterfall on the southern part of the island.

My husband went to St. Lucia (Oct. 2001) for our honeymoon and we stayed at the St. Lucia Halcyon. I believe that all the Sandals offer various tours/excursions that you can sign up for right there at the resort. I would recommend the 1 day sail that we took, you go on a catamaran that cruises to the Pitons which are very beautiful in person, there you dock and go see the town of Soufrie (spelling?) and then see the open volcano, botanical gardens, etc. We then stopped for lunch at a nearby restaurant. Then we went back to the catamaran where we then stopped to do an 1 hour snorkel, then went to see Marigot Bay. Meanwhile while you are on the catarman you can relax, soak up the sun, and they have drinks both non-alcoholic and alcohol, but beware of their "jungle juice" it hits you! They (Sandals) also offers other 1/2 day and full day excursions, St. Lucia is a beautiful island with lots to see and do. Have fun!

We were in St. Lucia last July for two weeks and one of the best tours we took was a boatride on the Brig/Unicorn.This took us all the way to Soufrier, where we were met by taxis, which brought us to the Volcanoes, mineral springs, and botanical gardens. They feed you a super lunch upon returning to the boat. You tnen sail back and stop for a swim along the way. This was the boat that the tv mini series roots was filmed on.The cost was $80pp,and don't go on Friday if you don't have kids (we do ) as it is family day and is geared toward kids.

The roads are HORRIBLE in St. Lucia. They are so curvy mirrors are installed in the cliffs so the drivers can see around a corner. We stayed at the Hyatt (now taken over by Sandals I believe) and hired a local cab driver to take us to the Pitons. We never made it. About 3/4 of the way there we turned around. I could not bear the thought of the drive back if we went any farther. Take a boat over and explore the area. I am so disappointed we missed such beauty.

We did this tour stluciajungletours.com/ We felt it was great and well worth the money. In an open jungle jeep. You will see parts of St. Lucia most tours do not take you. Check out the there web site. It was $75 pp, included lunch, and entrance fees to the sites.

We did a jeep safari tour. I honestly can't remember the name of the company, but we booked it through our hotel (the Wyndham). It was us and another couple in a jeep with a driver and a guide. It was lots of fun. We saw the rainforest, the botanical gardens, the pitons, the volcano, the mineral springs and drove through picturesque fishing villages. The return trip was on a boat...and we stop to snorkel for a bit at Anse Chastanet. I can't remember exact cost but it was less than $100/pperson.
Enjoy!

We also stayed at the Wyndham (I think it's called something else now) and did the jungle safari trip in open air jeeps, we had lunch at a plantation (I think), we stopped at all the places mentioned above then took the catamaran back which stopped for snorkeling.....it was the best excursion I've ever done. I haven't found one that packed as much to see in 1 day. You will love it!
