Now that we have returned from our wonderful trip to St. John, I am already starting to look toward next year. My inclination is to back to SJ but thought I would look into St. Lucia. Has anyone stayed at the Oasis Marigot and what accomodations did you use. It looks reasonably priced compared to St. John but looking for info from those who have used this facility. Also, what else do you recommend. Do not want to "hike" up hills to get back to accomodations from beach, etc. Also, are there other places to go snorkeling. St. Lucia is new to me. Any comments, advise appreciated.

We loved St. Lucia. Stayed at Anse Chastanet, which does require quite a bit of climbing up from the beach. If you are considering staying at Marigot Bay, be sure to read the postings at www.caribtravelnews.com from several months ago. More than one person commented on the noise level due to loud music several nights a week at one of the bar/restaurants on the bay. Depends on what you're looking for. This would detract from my enjoyment of a vacation spot.

Thank you for your response. I will check the caribtravelnews regarding this. This would indeed make a difference to me. Although I enjoy some nightlife, I also like to get going in the morning. Bob, your site is where I was looking. Things don't always look the same "in person" as they do in pictures. That is why I am looking for some first hand experience. Our villa in St. John was great but not quite what was shown in the beautiful photos. Those zoom lenses have a way of distoring things. <BR> <BR>Thanks again.

We stayed at a property adjacent to Oasis Marigot the first week in November. We were closer to the noisy club than Oasis Marigot and the noise didn't keep us from sleeping. We are also early to rise types. <BR> <BR>Whether I would recommend Marigot Bay to you would depend on what you're looking for in a resort. The swimming and snorkeling are not great in Marigot Bay (it's really a yacht harbor). There are several good restaurants and one can rent small sailboats or windsurfers (Oasis Marigot has a good deal on these). If you have more specific questions, we'd be happy to answer them.

If you stay at Marigot Bay and are interested in snorkeling, you should definitely take a day trip down to Anse Chastanet one day -- good snorkeling there, although probably not as good as St. John. Also, the sand on St. Lucia is volcanic so it's darker than what you find on the beaches in the Virgin Islands (the only white sand beaches on the island use imported sand).

Hi. I just got back a few weeks ago from St. Lucia for my honeymoon and wanted to let you all know some things I learned. We stayed in Marigot Bay at Oasis Marigot. It's a collection of cabins above another resort called the Marigot Beach Club. We found lots to enjoy but several times I also found myself wanting to warn people so that they could be aware of some disenchanting situations. For instance, Marigot Beach Club runs most of the activities right in that area. The folks who work there, upon introduction, will ask where you're staying and will take advantage somewhat if you are staying at the Oasis. Particularly watch out for Dr. Alex, the boatman (he'll the promise the world before he has your money-- afterward you will be lucky to get home from one of his trips), and don't bother eating at Doolittle's-- go across the way to the Chateau Mygo where the food is one third of the cost and delightful. The Oasis Marigot is slightly isolated by its bay location (water on one side, cliffs on the other) but this was not too much of a problem for us since the ferry ran 24 hours! The bungalos are up in the cliffs and are wonderful if you like a view from the cliffs but not the best if you like to be close to the sand. The beach at the bottom of the cliffs is narrow with comparatively murky water and many trees. We stayed in OC1, which faced west, so our view of the sunset was wonderful-- the favorite of most people there. We enjoyed the rustic atmosphere-- our bungalow had no glass in the windows, which were made like shutters. This meant that we had a wonderful breeze but very little privacy from neighbors. We didn't hear any noise at night apart from the birds and animals. The Oasis staff was charming and had people sweeping and cleaning constantly-- the grounds were very well maintained. It was more of a garden setting than a beach setting, although there was a wonderful view of the water. The guys on the beach below were more aggressive than we liked (John and his gang) so we were somewhat trapped between fending them off and hearing / being heard by our neighbors. Our favorite day was at Anse Chastenet-- they seemed to have more amenities but maintained a casual atmosphere. Plus, the snorkelling there was wonderful.
