St. John's versus Falmouth

Which area do you think it is better to stay in? We will be there after Christmas through New Years Day. Which area has more restaurant options, etc.

The capitol of Antigua which is indeed in the West Indies last time I checked ...? HAS a town called St.John if I am not mistaken ? ( I'm not mistaken in fact , except with spelling which seems to offend here )

Yup, capital of Antigua, which is in the Caribbean and not Canada, is St. John's. With the 's.

Druckerm, I don't know what your budget is or what kind of place you're looking for, but there aren't many hotels in the immediate St. John's area. It does have restaurants and shopping and I would certainly recommend spending some time there, but unless you are on a very restrictive budget, I would recommend looking elsewhere on the island for a homebase.

Falmouth is close to the options in English Harbour and Nelson's DOckyard and there are more beaches in that area but fewer restaurants than St. John's.

If you want to be near the action, staying in Dickinson Bay is your best bet. It's a lovely beach and you're within walking distance of several beach bars and restaurants and only a short drive from St. John's for a change of pace. Check out Siboney Beach Club for a mid-range place with much local charm and color, or Antiguan Village for a place with self catering facilities. Most of the other places along the beach are all-inclusives, but it sounds like you don't want that.

PLease let me know if you have further questions, as I am a big fan of Antigua.

druckerm, i just realized from another post that you're from PR, so you might not be putting beach time as a priority on your trip to Antigua. DO you want more nightlife? Local color?

Though I've not stayed at Catamaran, it's a place I hear talked of positively. Especially among the sailing crowd and the locals. My fave hotel is part of the same local hotel group called Very Intimate Places of Antigua--a group of locally owned or owner-managed small hotels where the emphasis is on customer service.

Hope you have a great time there!

kindly excuse my ignorance of antigua. however in new brunswick there is a town named st. john and not to far away in maine (where i live currently) in a town named falmouth. thus the confusion on my part... think i'd rather travel to your falmouth than mine. again sorry for the confusion.

"Saint" John is indeed in New Brunswick , St.John's is in NFLD . And St.John with no s is in usvi ..... You were trying to be helpful thinking an error had been made on the part of the poster . It is sometimes an issue here when a poster by accident asks a question about St.John and puts the dreaded S .... lol Faith .

Virginia,

My pet peeve (among many !) is to open a post on the US board with Portland in the subject and find there is no reference to Oregon...just assumption that the Oregon Portland is the one and only.

We've got a great little city up here

The St John and St. John's will get you every time...unless you have a working knowledge of that wonderful neighbor, Canada and her provinces !

Just to be clear , I have absolutely NO problem when someone leaves out , adds , twists , turns , or does whatever with the s !!!

Faith,

May the proper usage of an "s" be the least of our problems in the world today.

You always make me smile...thanks !

Hello druckerm! I cant help but recommend St. John, especially since you are going to be there for New Years Eve. On New Years Eve catch the ferry in St. John at Cruz Bay over to Tortola. The ferry from St. John will take you to beautiful Roadtown in Tortola and from there go over to Apple Bay beach and party at the BOMBAS SURFSIDE SHACK at Apple Bay for New years Eve. That is the best New Years Eve party I know of.While in Tortola you should see beautiful Cane Garden Bay beach and also Long Bay. Awesome beaches. You will love Tortola and it is only about 8 or 9 miles from St. John and the ferry ride there is wonderful. You will need a passport in Tortola though.I would recommend staying at the WESTIN resort in St. John, it is a beautiful resort with super rates and you can find it by going to www.westin/st.john. I hope this helps!

Thanks for the info. but we are going to Antigua (capital St. John's). We are not going to St. John in the USVI. I've been to both St. John and Tortola and enjoyed them both. Thanks for the help though.
