St Johns heat in August

My family of 4 (2 kids 15,17)stayed at Caneel Bay in July '97. The temperature was high 80's/low 90's and Caneel did not have air conditioning! It was hot but not unbearable. Expect the heat; plan to spend a lot of time in the water; plan your activities with the heat in mind. We've been to St. John twice during the summer months and we would not hestitate going back again soon.

we have been vacationing in st john since 1968 first with our daughter and now our grandchildren. its our all time favorite spot in the caribbean- totally laid back with the emphasis on great snorkeling and swimming. we've been there both in season and out. remember to bring plenty of sunscreen and insect repellent as well as choose <BR>a villa that is high up. we prefer the coral bay, mamey peak, ajax mountain locales. we have rented form destination st john- laura, john and nancy are terrific (on web) or try caribbean villas and resort management or a new one called windspree vacation homes. we schlepp our own meat and veggies in a cooler. there are two fair markets on the island- dont expect gourmet items. be sure and take the one day trip to virgin gorda that leaves from the dock @ the old wharf-its a great day of fun for everyone. we've rented a lot of villas- our favorites <BR>are in the coral bat area. car rentals local- gladys and conrad sutton from sutton rentals. if you have any questions just holler. PS remember august can be hurricane time so plan accordingly. have a great trip.

Since you specifically asked about the heat, I will address that issue. I would highly recommend staying somewhere with air conditioning! We were there at Gallow's Point in July of '97, and although we had a wonderful time and the view was exceptionally beautiful overlooking the water, IT WAS MISERABLY HOT! Our unit did not have AC, just fans and full length windows on 3 sides. This did not suffice. We would wake up hot, get out of the shower and sweat, and go to bed at night hot. And just so you don't think I'm a wimp--I'm from Texas where we really know what heat is like.
