Recently Separated Need Recharging

I'm 40 and separating from my husband who I have been with for 20 years. I am in desperate need of a vacation and a change of scenery and could use some advice.

l will be travelling in mid-July and want somewhere warm with a white sandy beach. I may or may not want to leave the beach and spa, but if I do, I'd like to be able to take in the sights or do something adventerous (and completely out of my comfort zone) like zipline. I am not a huge drinker so I'm not sure if an all inclusive would be a positive or negative. My one main requirement is that, since I will be travelling alone, I am safe. I need a place to completely relax and zone out so any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I'm traveling from Boston and would really love to not exceed $1200 for 5 days.

Really sorry for your situation. Good luck with your trip and getting some much needed R&R. Also sorry I don't know any of the islands you are asking about. If you're interested in Jamaica, Negril has what you describe. I like it there a lot.

I often travel solo to beach-y vacations. for example I can do 7-10 days in Puerto Vallarta Mexico or Waikiki Oahu Hawaii (from Seattle) for $1200 air, hotel, expenses total. I never go AI because they are usually based on double-occupancy so really never a good deal for a single person.

Just wanted to wish you well. IF you choose Negril, my fav places there are : COCO LA PALM, IDLE AWHILE, and, on the cliffs, ROCKHOUSE. ROUND HILL is close to Montego Bay, but very pricey and tends to cater to an expensive clientele. Also doesn't have the same glorious beach as Negril and is hard to get off property without a car. Anyway, good luck! You deserve a wonderful break!!

I have been to all of the Islands you listed and I would say either Aruba or Turks and Caicos. Both Islands are very safe (use common sense) and have good restaurants that are convenient to get to so you wouldn't need to do an AI. I would not have any issues traveling alone to either of those destinations.

Though I have been to Jamaica twice, I personally, would not feel comfortable going without my husband or a friend. That is my personal preference.

Grand Cayman would be a good option also for solo travel, but it's a very expensive Island, so not sure if it would meet that budget.

There is a poster here by the name of Blamona, who frequents T & C all of the time. Do a search and read her posts.

When we went to Aruba, we did a snorkel trip and there was a single younger girl on our tour. She was very outgoing and just fine being by herself.

Sorry to here about your troubles. I've been where you are and found the 2nd time around to be much better.

Have a great trip.

I've been to most islands by myself.

I do love Turks, and it's one of the best for what you're looking for.

Very safe, gorgeous beach. Take excursions so you can meet people and mingle.
Go have dinners where there's live bands, it's mellow but the atmosphere is great for eating, won't make you feel alone.

Take an excursion with Island Vibes. Introduce yourself to Sean. His band plays Thur nights at Somewhere. You'll feel like your included and fit in.

Introduce yourself to Daniel and Nadine. They sing numerous places. They will make you feel welcome.

Tell all 3 Blamona said hi, they'll become lifelong friends.

Grace Bay is a great beach to find your inner piece.

Go on Tripadvisor. Very friendly forum. Users there always post "whose going" and try to meet up.

You can be alone, but with these ways don't have to be.

Sorry for what you're going through. Great way to get through it!

Although I am not a huge fan of Aruba's because of it being so commercialized, for that same reason it would be a safe place with beautiful white beaches for you to enjoy and it is an easy place to get around.

This is a great time for you to get away and listen attentively to yourself. You gave someone else 20 years of your life and your attention. Let this be time just for you. Good luck. It DOES get better!

My husband and I went to T&C so I'm definately staying clear of that island.

Keep the advice coming and thanks for all the well wishes. ~K

I feel OK traveling solo to Jamaica myself, but I can see where some people might not be comfortable with it. It's more 'wild & wooly' imo than the other islands tourists visit.

How about Grenada? The people are fabulous. It's a VERY friendly island. Grande Anse beach is beautiful and I think it would be in your budget! Good luck to you, sorry to hear about your circumstances! I hope you go on your trip and that it gives you a sense of confident freedom! Do what you want when you want! If you didn't end up zip lining, you could hike to crater lake! Or do both!

Check out Vieques (by way of flying into San Juan, Puerto Rico and ferry to Vieques- I doubt the flights to Vieques would meet your budget). There is a VERY nice Westin in Vieques w/a great spa and beaches, and the rates are low in July. Try to to at the time of the smallest moon so you can do an excursion to the BioBay at night.
