How safe is Kingston, Jamaica?

Hi,

I have volunteer job offer in Kingston, Jamaica for one year. I've read reports and many bad article about crime and sex crime in Jamaica. How bad is it? does anybody have experience working/living in Kingston? And how safe is to travel to resorts from Kingston (Negril? Ocho-rios?)
Thanks

www.travel.state.gov Jamaica Kingston super dodgy

go through there in my work a fair amount would never live there

Volunteering scammers and many other scammers abound.

Prefer legit volunteering from $100/wk or less all in for me

www.latortugafelize.com

www.saexplorers.org

www.hh4honduras.org

Careful reasearch important

One should not have to pay large sums to "volunteer"

Be sure you are not doing a job a local should do.

Better to backpack around and sontribute to the economy...

I have no experience working or even visiting Kingston. I have been to Jamaica (Montego Bay/Negril) a few times. Kingston has had a bad reputation for safety and crime for many years.

Can't you get a volunteer placement on some other part of the island? Pretty much anywhere besides Kingston would be safer for you.

About 18 years ago, my wife and I gave one of her EPA workmates a spare piece of furniture. A pretty young lady of about 25, she mentioned that she had worked in the Peace Corps in Jamaica. She did not enjoy her experience but did not elaborate.

Working in the Peace Corp in Jamaica is fine. I know several people who did it (as recently as last year, as long ago as 25 years) and liked it just fine. But they were NOT based in Kingston.

Ive been living in Kingston since 1999
Like any other city it has good and bad areas
The issue you will most likely have is knowing where to go and socialize.
I live in Kingston 19 which is a good area.
Before you go try and connect with people living in Kingston. Rent an apartment in a gated community until you start to know the city.
I would try norbrook, manor park, golden triangle, cherry gardens , new Kingston, and Waterloo.
Once you learn Kingston it will grow on you.

The question is, do you really want to risk it? It is no mystery that Kingston is not a safe area for (non) locals. Why even take the chance? NFW for this kid....

this post is 2-years old. Either Irina already went, or didn't, a long time ago.

im sure irina already made her decision, but i want to respond to all you idiots who advised her not to go or to go elsewhere. i am from Kingston, but i live in Connecticut now and i have never seen any drugs or crime until i moved here, Kingston for me was bliss, and CT is this vile place but i would never tell anyone not to come to Connecticut because i know that there are parts of CT that is extremely safe, just like parts of Kingston, my Kingston! and im sure everywhere is like that. Kingston has a bad rep because foreigners are obsessed with the worst side of us, they are not interested in families like mine!
