Gran Melia versus El Conquistador
Hi
We are planning an adult trip with our friends for 4 days ( without our children). We are torn between these two hotels - any recommendations?? I would also like to know about the pool and beach side space at the Gran Melia ( I haven't been able to find pictures of them)
Thanks

Hi Judy,
Is budget a consideration? If not, stay at the El Conquistador. There really is no comparison.
The Gran Melia has a nice pool but the beach there is lacking... As far as the El Con (it's built on a cliff), the pools are fantastic but their beach is actually offshore on a little island. Very nice, but you have to take the hotel boat ferry to get there, it takes about 10 minutes. Hope this helps.

Gran Melia (www.granmeliapuertorico.com)
about 3-4 years old used to be an all-inclusive resort called "Paradisus". Same owners but changed back to a classic resort style. I used to live right outside the property in Coco Beach, a neighborhood that shares the same entrance road. I lived there when they built the property. It is located on a small peninsula that has a beautiful beach and it's own golf course and casino among many other things. My wife was the executive administrative assistant to the GM. I've been there plenty of times, but, before they changed the name. My aunt just stayed there for a weekend, she's a local and critical by nature...she loved it.
El Conquistador (www.elconresort.com), also beautiful, is the older of the two by a decade or so and as stated in an earlier reply, is built on a cliff...very windy most of the time. It is huge, two-tiered, upper, the main building, is on the cliff, the lower is accessed by a trolley type vehicle that takes you down.
Very hard choice, both are awesome. both are located on the northeast part of the island. Gran Melia being closer of the two to San Juan by about 1/2 hour 20 minutes.
Hope that helps...check out the links..gran melia site has a virtual tour and El Con has a cool video...any way, good luck...and have fun.
