First time to Jamaica - Itinerary Help

My boyfriend and I are going to Jamaica for the first time in July. What are the must see places in Jamaica? I would like to snorkel but from what I have read the place we are staying (Sandals Whitehouse) isn't a good place to snorkel.

Thanks!

I stay in Negril, at Hedo 11 and love it. See tons of fish right out front. Bring small chunks of bannas, the fish love it!1 they will be all over you!!

Jamaica is a pretty large island and traveling times from one place to another take longer that you might think looking at a map. Whitehouse is pretty isolated along the south coast, but a nice daytrip would perhaps be up the Black River and then out to the Pelican Bar, which is actually offshore in the water. You can no doubt book through Sandals, which will put you with a pretty large group on a pontoon boat that can't go as far up the river. For a more intimate experience, try booking a trip directly with Dennis in the Treasure Beach area. If you took a taxi to Treasure Beach to meet him in the morning you could then boat along the coast, see wild dolphins at play, go up the Black River farther than the larger pontoon boats go, get out for cold Red Stripes and some fun swimming in the river at a stopping place, then turn around and head back down the river to stop for lunch. Then after lunch go back out to the open water for the trip to the Pelican Bar and then back to Treasure Beach. It was a great daytrip when my husband and I did it. The Black River has crocodiles that you can see, by the way, but the swimming hole that Dennis stops in is much farther up river than they go. There's a rope swing for jumping in the water there.

There's also a daytrip to Negril if you'd like to spend the day on a busy but beautiful beach.

You might also want to consider a daytrip to YS Falls. This could be combined with a daytrip to the Black River, but not if you go with Dennis.

Hope you enjoy Jamaica. It's a beautiful country.

Re ej's advice, talkofthetownnegril.com offers a private or group tour to Pelican and Black River...with the same Dennis. They pick up at Sandals WH already. Their tour starts in TB, does dolphins and Pelican bar, up the river but then you get picked up at the mouth of the river and head back towards SWH...makes sense if you aren't staying in TB.

Other things to consider that are pretty close...Treasure Beach/Lover's Leap, Font Hill wildlife sanctuary, Peter Tosh's family home and mausoleum, and of course Negril, should you get the urge to jetski or parasail or visit the Sandals there. Sunset on the cliffs would be a nice way to end that day.

liza, I'm so glad that you posted because I was thinking to myself that ending the daytrip in Treasure Beach would mean an awful lot of backtracking at the end of the day to get back to Whitehouse. I'm glad to know that Talk of the Town offers a package.

I asked TOTT to do it for me a couple of years ago, as I wanted to take my kids on that trip but we were staying in Negril.

We'd done it with Dennis before (to and from TB) so I arranged it with Sala and Dennis, introduced them, and now they do that same tour all the time for Whitehouse and Negril people
