Ease my worry about Montego Bay & Sandles Royal Caribbean.

My husband and I are taking our first trip to the Caribbean in March. In fact first trip outside of US and away from kids. I had planned this romantic get away for us but all this talk about Montego Bay and how it is just not worth the time or money is putting a scare into me. Should I change my mind and try to get my money back. Also I have read negative about Sandals Royal Caribbean (rude staff, dirty jacuzzi, slow service). Can someone ease my fears or just tell me to get the money back if I can. Thanks

Therese
Relax. We have stayed at Sandals Negril and loved it. One of the best vacations we have ever had. We have not stayed at Royal but did visit it when we were at Negril and it is very, very nice and plush. I do think the beach is better at Negril, but I do not think you will be unhappy at Royal. You will not be spending any time to speak of in Montego Bay anyway, most of time will be within the resort. You can take some organized trips into town if you want to. You might think about a day trip to Dunn's River Falls (it will be offered by Sandals)...it is really fun and you will also get to see Ocho Rios as well. Have fun you did not make a mistake.

Royal is a very nice resort - the grounds are beautiful, great off shore island (nice and quiet out there!), food and service are very good and really just a nice resort.

I do have a site that offers picutres of the resort if that would help you - just email me.

Also, try looking on a site called "Caribbean Travel Roundup" - it offers reviews on resorts written by guests. The Yahoo Sandals Website is also good.

Penney

Montego Bay is a large city, and parts of it are unattractive and/or unsafe. As a Sandals guest, you will be several miles from the city proper and you can spend as little time there as you wish.
Personally, I felt safe in the Gloucester Ave. area (the main tourist strip) during the daytime and I enjoyed swimming and snorkeling at Doctor's Cave Beach and eating at the Pork Pit.
You can do all kinds of exploring with a reputable guide or on excursions arranged at your resort.
I haven't stayed at Sandals Royal, but the Sandals resorts seem to have a good reputation generally (most people like them, and a few don't).
We stayed in a hotel that is a few notches below Sandals and thoroughly enjoyed our week in Jamaica. Have fun, and no worries!

Penny You cannot advertise your travel business on this board....Shame on you. It is also a bit presumptious to state that you can get a better price, the original post doesn't state how much they paid. This is another reason why people don't use travel agents because they are obviously full of sh.. and you are a fine example of that.

Therese,
Check out my message board, titled "Pros and Cons of Jamaica." I had the same worries you are experiencing and also asked for advice. I received a lot of good information, so you're certainly welcome to see what others have said about the safety of the island.
When will you be in Jamaica? We'll be in Montego Bay from the 17th to the 24th.

Our first experience with the Caribbean was in Mo Bay. People are not being dramatic when they talk about the safety issues, so do listen, but Jamaica has a certain mystique to it. We stayed at the Flagship Sandals, but visited the Royal. It maybe isn't the most extravagant of the Sandals properties, but I think you will find it to be romanatic. After all, you will be with the man you love. Consider going to the other resorts, too, and you must experience the beauty of Dunn's River. Have a great trip!
