Dominican Republic or Aruba in March?

My husband & I have tix to travel to either Aruba or the Dominican Republic (Santo Domingo or Puerta Plata)...we've heard great things about Aruba, but flying there will take us over 24 hrs. with an overnight stay in San Juan. Can you please advise whether we should opt for the Dominican Republic; also, any info on places to stay would be great! We have loved other Caribbean islands on previous trips...Grand Cayman, St. Thomas, St. Martin, St. Croix.

Julie, it's hard to believe that you would get to DR in much less time than it would take to get to Aruba, but I must say that having been to Aruba 2ce in less than a year and enjoyed it, it is hardly worth spending 24 hours to get to. It's nice but not that great imo. I have heard very good things about DR lately and know that tourism is on the rise there, so if you can get there in less than a day, I would try it.
