Could anyone give me an insight into this hotel, that has been there recently. Most of the posts are at least 2 years old. There would be six of us , all very lively early 60's !! We did think about barbados, but it seems very touristy & with long beaches rather than smaller coves. Grateful for any help.

If I remember correctly, Coco Reef is located, like a lot of hotels, near the airport. Need I say more? A lot of the coral reef in that area has been "destroyed."

I visited Trinidad and Tobago in July and I highly recommend that you travel (and stay) away from the airport. We stayed at The Blue Mango in Castara and at Manta Lodge in Speyside.

The Blue Mango has WONDERFUL views and is within five minutes of a beach. One of the three cottages on the property overlooks the beach and has stairs leading to it. The one we stayed in is perched atop a hillside and overlooks the ocean. There is a restaurant on the premises and each cottage has a kitchen (shop at the grocery store near the airport).

Manta Lodge was really nice too. If you are traveling during high season, there are about five or so restaurants on the road to Manta Lodge. The owner's father is often there and he makes strong drinks and has a wicked sense of humor. You can learn to dive in their swimming pool and you are within a stone's throw from Little Tobago and its surrounding brain coral.

Tobago is undeveloped and, as far as I'm concerned, closer to what the Caribbean looked like fifty years ago than most of the other islands. The hotel down the road from Manta Lodge (I think it's called The Blue Waters Inn or something like that) has an extensive list of cocktails, etc. and overlooks the ocean. I have read, however, that the restaurant isn't that good and the rates are fairly high.

As mentioned by an earlier poster, Coco Reef is located in the most built-up part of Tobago near the airport (very little airport noise as flights are few). It sits on a small, manmade beach that's sheltered by a rock breakwater that keeps the water very, very calm (some say boringly calm). The food is good, and it's within walking distance of a number of restaurants. The rooms are above average and generally have good water pressure -- but that can vary. Coco Reef is very popular with people taking charter flights from England.
As Whistle said, the undeveloped north end of the island is best for beauty and atmosphere. However, hotels up there tend to be basic without a lot of creature comforts.
We usally divide our trips there into north and south stays. Wherever you stay, you'll be impressed by the island's beauty and the friendliness of the people.
P.S. With three couples, you also may want to consider renting a villa. There are some very good ones.

Thank you for the info about Coco Reef , we had thought about a villa , but then you don't get the sociability of a resort & we prefer not to live in each others pockets. We went with friends to Galley Bay this year & it was great , we met up for meals , but generally did our own thing .
