5 days in PR?
Hi all,
Hubby and I are planning a short trip to PR for 5 days. We are trying to figure out our itinerary -- we are thinking of spending 3 nights in San Juan at the Numero 1 guesthouse. Would we need a rental car to stay there? Are there restaurants and shops nearby? We plan to do some day trips to the El Yunque rainforest and the Arecibo observatory (and Camuy caves).
We are trying to figure out if we should spend a night at the Copamarina near Ponce or a night on Vieques. I'm not crazy about small planes so we are thinking of driving to Fajardo to take the 10 min flight. Is Vieques worth it? We would only be going to see the biobay.
Are there any other sights that are a must (we will obviously be going to OSJ and El Morro).
Thank you!

I like the Southwestern part of the island. Boqueron and Santa Beaches are nice. La Parguera and Guanica (Where the Copamarina hotel is) have neat things to see including the dry forest and phos Bay. El Faro (Lighthouse) in Cabo Rojo is worth checking out. San German is a pretty town not too far that is a small version of Old San Juan.
Not to far from Yunque, I suggest a drive on the Panoramic Highway from Camuy to Aibonito. Spectacular views.
When you visit Camuy, I suggest driving out west to see Isabela and Aguadilla. Another option is to drive in the mountains to Morovis and see coffee country.
Enjoy your trip.

Vieques is a great place with spectacular beaches. But with only 5 days I think you will end up spending a lot of time just traveling and not sightseeing. My suggestion is to stick with just the main island.
You can take a bus into Old San Juan and I suggest budgeting about 2 days there. Late at night you could hail a cab and it should cost you about $15 to get back to Numero Uno (if that much).
A car will be preferred if you head out to El Yunque. If my memory serves me right it is about an hour from San Juan.
To get to the Ricon or the southwestern part of the island it will be roughly 2.5 to 3 hours of travel time. Its quaint there and the beaches are quite nice (but not as nice as Vieques).
Luquillo beach to the east is great as well (which could be a day trip). If you are into street food that would be the place to be.
Now, if you are a beach lover like me, then the beachs in Vieques are definitely better than that of the main island. All San Juan beaches face the Atlantic which means surf is always heavy.
I hope this helps.

We would have preferred another day in OSJ, which we loved, to the day in Ponce- we felt like we'd done it within 2 hours of finding the place, and that included a half hour of wandering to find Castillo Serrales and the hour long tour (I really wanted that hour of my life back)- otherwise it was just a less impressive more touristy version of OSJ.
Regardless, do one of the biobays- we considered going again the next day it was so cool!

Thanks all.
We have booked to stay 5 nights in SJ. Is that too long? We plan to do one day trip to El Yunque/Luquillo/kiosks and another to the caves/Arecibo observatory. One day will be for OSJ and El Morro, etc. That leaves a day and a half to veg on the beach in Isla Verde. We hope to do the Fajardo biobay tour on the El yunque trip.
Are the beaches in Vieques spectacular? We have been to many Caribbean islands so have seen beautiful beaches (Anguilla, St. john, etc.). Not sure if it is worth it to fly to Vieques for one night...
I think we will rent a car just for one day to do the El Yunque trip and will just take a bus/cab to OSJ and an organized tour to the observatory. Are we walking distance to many restaurants in SJ?
