Trois-Rivieres, Quebec

It took me a few tries to find a web page about Trois-Rivieres, but it is in French. As I am not proficient in this language, I can guess some of the information. Are there sites in English?
What is the public transportation in this city? Is it easy to get around the city? I'll be staying in the Univ. of Quebec.
I am also checking the possibility of renting a car from Montreal. Travelling from Montreal to Trois-Rivieres seems to be by bus ( the webpage said no train stops there). I just wonder if it is worth the expenses for car rental.
Please send any suggestions. Thank you!

Hi Nancy

Correct, no train stops in Trois-Rivieres... the carrier from Montreal is Orleans Express with about 8 trips daily. Trois-Rivieres does have a bus system with several lines (a friend told me it was decent for his purposes)... I didn't use it when I visited though so I can't comment much. Vieux Trois-Rivieres and downtown Trois-Rivieres are pretty compact, readily walkable, are quite charming in places. I visited without a car, no problem, but I did not venture much outside the center core.

I recommend working on your French before you go. Unlike Old Quebec City (lots of tourists) and Montreal (sizeable anglophone population), Trois Rivieres is off the tourist map and people around you I think you'll find are more unilingual than in the two other cities.

Transportation website: http://www.sttr.qc.ca

Have fun! Daniel

Thank you, Daniel. From this transportation website, I think Line #3 & #4 is probably most useful for me as these lines pass University of Quebec.
Is anyone familiar with University of Quebec in Trois-Rivieres?

Hi nancy161,

Yes, the #3, #4, and also the #21 look like they'll get you from the center to UQTR.

If you look at the map provided by that transportation website, the central, walkable part of the city I visited is just to the left of the Riviere St Maurice, nearest to the "Fleuve Saint Laurent" on the map.

The Orleans Express bus arrives near the corner of Saint-Georges and Saint-Olivier on that map. (The #3, #4 and #21 also appear to head out to UQaTR from here.) Rue des Forges and Royale right near there have a lot of businesses including pastry shops, cafes and pubs as well as the tourist info which was on Royale right near the bus station. If you look just to the left of the Saint-Maurice river in that area, rue des Ursulines (which was spared the fire in the early 1900s and so retains an air of early French colonial settlement) is a lovely street with old churches, a nunnery, and some of the earliest homes of Trois-Rivieres (Trois Rivieres just recently celebrated its 375 year anniversary, so it's fairly old on a North American scale).

As for as the Université du Québec à Trois Rivières is concerned, all I know is that UQaTR is part of the system of Quebec universities which includes UQAM in Montreal, UQAC in Chicoutimi. While not as well-respected educational institutions as McGill or the Universite de Montreal, they're not dubious/sketchy, if that's your concern. These tend to be where people might go who didn't have quite as high marks prior to university (or people who wanted to stay close to home who are from Trois-Rivieres).

Best wishes, Daniel
