Transportation from Port Hardy to Victoria

DH and I are thinking of taking the VIA Skeena train from Jasper to Port Rupert and then continuing on the ferry to Port Hardy. Has anyone taken the bus from there to Victoria? If we rent a car 1-way($300!), are there things to do and see on the way?
Another option might be to take the Skeena roundtrip, go to Vancouver by rail and then take a ferry to Victoria. Not too excited about back-tracking. Any other ideas?
We were in Victoria on a day trip many years ago. Any need for a car there? Thanks for any advice.

There are several options for your trip but I don't recommend doing the return Skeena route. That would cost a lot more and once you have seen that route it will be enough - trees trees trees!!!! Before you make up your mind you should check out this website

You can also take the regular bus from Port Hardy to Courtenay and switch to the day liner train to Victoria. There are many options but perhaps you should check out the tour website I gave you first even if you don't want to take it you will get an idea of what's to see along the way. Just post again and we can give you other suggestions.

This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you. I emailed the Port Hardy chamber of commerce and they told me only options were Greyhound bus or car rental. We love trains so may do that if bus schedule coordinates and unless we hear wonderful things about bus tour. Which would you recommend? Thanks again.

Hi Susan

I checked times etc and my recommendation is to do the bus trip. It is quite a long drive to Victoria and the only way to do it other than the bus is to rent a car. The stops the bus makes are all interesting and it works out to be not much more in cost but you don't have to worry about gas and directions. The train on the island runs from Courtenay to Victoria but is only once a day and I don't think the bus would get you there in time anyway. So - I say sit back and relax and enjoy a bus tour!!!! Have fun.
