Transit Strike in Toronto

My wife and I fly into Toronto this Thursday night (4/22). Will it be possible to get downtown or will all the cabs be in use in the city and all the airport buses full? We don't get in until 10:00 PM, so I would think that it would be OK, but if anyone has any tips to avoid a long delay, please let me know. Thanks!

Brian - you shouldn't have any trouble at the airport because the cabs that serve the airport aren't licensed to operate in the City of Toronto - so it's pretty much business as usual at the airport.

The Provincial government is attempting to legislate the workers back, and there's a 50/50 chance they might be back at work by Friday morning. Surprisingly, traffic hasn't been as bad as anticipated and if you're staying downtown and don't mind walking you should be fine. Hope you have a great time - would love to hear about your favourite restaurants when you get home!

Dear Brian,

You and your wife should have no difficulty arriving at Toronto at that hour. There will be plenty of cabs and shuttles to the major downtown hotels. The big crunch with the TTC strike has been the people trying to commute into the city in the am, and leave in the early evening. As long as you're planning on walking as your main mode of transport, you should be okay. If you do need a cab ride in the downtown area, just do your hailing between 10:30 am and 3:30 p.m., and after 7:30 p.m. Bring an umbrella, as there's rain in the forecast for Saturday.
Have fun!

Brian

Me again - as of 8 a.m. EST on Wed. April 20.99, the Toronto Transit strike is over. You and your wife should now have no problems getting around our fair city.
Have fun!

Just read the good news myself. Given the outlook for the weather this weekend, that is a great relief.

One last question. Those single day passes that can be bought and are good from the first time of use to (something like) 5:30 AM, are those good for the Rocket and Trams and Buses? And when you get on a tram or bus, do you just show the card or does it need to be stamped somehow? Thanks!

If you buy the day long pass on the TTC, it is good for all the subways, buses, streetcars and LRTs in Toronto. You do have to show the pass each time you board - they don't stamp it. The only place you can't use a day long pass is on the GO Train, which is run by the provincial government, not the city of Toronto, and goes to the outlying suburb areas. The TTC subways run from 6 a.m. to about 1 to 2 a.m., and some streetcars routes (College) run 24 hours per day. The hotel should have a schedule to keep you on track. Enjoy.
