Packing a bike on Via from Toronto to Halifax
I will be travelling next week to Halifax on Via Rail and I understand that the bike box they provide is large. Exactly how big though? I have a 26inch mountain bike. Will I have to remove the front wheel? I know the pedals for sure need to come off. I also have a rack on the back of the bike, do I need to take that off? I've never taken apart my bike so I'm kinda worried that I'll screw something up, and I also don't want to be at union station looking like a dummy trying to do it LOL

If you think about it, let me know how this goes as I'll be on the Ocean train (Montreal-Halifax) in a month's time.

I was only told that the pedals had to be removed & the handlebars turned... nothing about the front wheel or removing a rack. I have a rack & foldable basket, don't add much to the width, but let me know if you have to remove them.
Best wishes, Daniel

Ok, the box they gave me was huge! could fit 2 bikes even. It was plenty wide and plenty long. No damage to my bike, everything went smooth. Could have fit in the box with the pedals on but i took them off anyways

You'll be glad you have those bikes in Halifax (and beyond) and please do post Trip Reports as this is something that folks who visit us here in Lunenburg, NS always ask about.
What roads are good? what to avoid? any innnkeepers/hostel owners that make life better/worse for cyclists? how does Halifax measure up as a cycling city?times of year that are better than others? (beyond the obvious: already suspected it is not fun slogging along Gottingen in January!)
