Niagra Falls 2 days

We have 2 days in Niagra Falls area before a wedding in Buffalo. Any advice on where to stay? I am trying to decide between Niagra Falls and Niagra on the Lake. We are coming in from New York City and might need the down time of Niagra on the Lake. We are doing the falls and Maid of the Mist with family after the wedding. We like Bed and Breakfasts as well as hotels. Thanks for your help.

Niagara Falls is busy and touristy (especially summer weekends. When are you going?). They are also spectacular - but if you're doing them after the wedding anyway, maybe it would be nice to visit NOTL. Charming Victorian town, famous Shaw Festival Theatre (in season), a number of shops to browse, a selection of dining options, many B&B's and several high end Inns if you want luxury. However, there may not be quite enough right in town for 2 days (unless you're planning on taking in a couple of plays). But nearby Niagara wine country is also a popular draw and reason to stay in NOTL. Ontario wines are very good, most wineries offer tastings, tours, the scenery is nice, and some wineries also offer excellent dining, a few with views from the Escarpment towards the Lake. Check http://www.niagarabedandbreakfasts.com/ and also google "Niagara-on-the-Lake Inns".

If you do decide to stay in Niagara Falls, my suggestion would be to consider staying in a room with a view in one of the "Fallsview District" hotels (a number of major chains have high-rises here on a ridge overlooking the Falls).

The short drive between Niagara Falls and NOTL along the Niagara Parkway is scenic, with stops possible for nature trails, Botanical Gardens, Gorge overviews (e.g. "the Whirlpool"), Butterfly Conservatory and picnic areas.

Your budget is important and you can find places from about $120 per night to $1000 a night in Niagara on the Lake... there are also cottages... check out www.vintage-hotels.com for some great hotel choices

We will be there August 3rd and 4th. I am leaning toward one night at NOTL and one at the falls. Hubby isn't much for plays, but the wine country would interest him. I am now leaning towards a B&B one night and the Falls area for the other. Any suggestions for restaurants that are not chains that overcharge?

Lots of good "non-chain" restaurants in and around NOTL. A good moderately upscale restaurant is the Stone Road Grille. The various "Inns" all have fine dining. Several of the wineries also. The Olde Angel Inn is a decent pub in town. The B&B's are pretty good for recommending the current favourites. For area wineries: http://winecountryontario.ca/Niagara-on-the-Lake and http://winecountryontario.ca/Niagara...-Twenty-Valley . Also click on "downloads" on the right of either page for maps and details.

The Falls, well, a lot of chain restaurants. There are a couple of Italian restaurants in the Falls that have been recommended here in past (but I haven't eaten in for years so can't give a recommendation). Of the chains, I usually pick The Keg (the one in the Embassy Suites, not the other) - a chain steakhouse with other meny options which has decent food, a view of the falls, and a convenient location if you're staying in the Fallsview District.

Consider the Niagara Fallsview Casino or the Oakes Hotel for your night at the Falls... for dining, the wineries are just a 15 minute drive... consider Hillebrand or Peller for an upscale but pricier choice... and the Old Winery, Stone Road, The Harp Pub, Angel Inn as good food, second tier pricing...

there are over a hundred B&B's in NotL and I would use their central service to help select one... check the Chamber website...

Thanks for your great suggestions. Does anyone know how much time we should allow to get through customs and back to Buffalo Niagara Airport on a Monday morning? Our flight leaves at 12:30 p.m. We will be turning in a car too.

Customs on a non-holiday monday 0-10 minutes

... drive to airport... before 10am 40 minutes...
after 10am 30 minutes

I would leave the hotel at 9:30- 10am...

Spikeit,
We just returned from a week-long vacation, which included one night in Niagara Falls. We stayed at the Rodeway Inn. The room was clean & spacious, & the price was reasonable: $144 with AAA discount plus tax.

For dinner, we ate at the Syndicate, which Fallsdude (I think) had recommended. We really like this restaurant, the food was delicious & reasonable, & they have outside dining.

The falls are beautiful, but be prepared for the tacky commercialism & huge crowds!

For two nights, I would just pick one place to stay. The distance between NOTL and NF is really nothing. It'd take you longer to pack up, check out and check in than it will to drive to the other town.

Think about your preferred way to spend the evening and pick your location that way. If you want to gamble, walk a "midway", be around lots of people, stay in NF. If you want a quiet, relaxing evening, stay in NOTL. You can easily get to the other location for sightseeing, so it's not a big deal either way.
