Help choosing Banff hotel: good to stay in town? quiet hotel? value?

I am staying for 3 nights at the Baker Chalets nearer to Lake Louise. After, we wish to spend 3 more nights elsewhere, probably nearby Banff.
What is the town like? Is it a good idea to stay in that area or further away? Is it an ugly strip of hotels and souvenir stores? Is there a place just off the town but with a sense of privacy?
I do not want a b and b and do not want to spend over $250US per night, prefer to spend under $200 really.
Ideally, I would like a quiet room, clean and somewhat "classy" hotel, from which I get to the gondola, the water float trips etc easily. I also plan to drive to Lake Moraine and I will have a car. If the hotel had a nice outdoor hot tub or heated pool, that would be a real plus. I can get a room at the Delta, Fox, Inns of Banff, Banff Park, Charltons Cedars,
and quite a few others.

All activity suggestions for the out of shape are welcome!
Thanks.

Banff is essentially Banff Avenue...one "long" strip (about 1 mile...easy walking...from end to end). Hotels are scattered along this strip and for one or two blocks on either side. At the downtown end of the strip is the Bow River and across the bridge you'll find the Banff Springs Hotel (ex$pen$ive) and the Rimrock (not quite so but still co$tly). The gondola is up along this road just past the Rimrock.

I've stayed at the Rundlestone...nice, quiet place, clean, pool and in your price range. Make sure you check for things like senior or AMA or corporate discount with any of the hotels; less likely in summer but still possible.

Thanks! I actually forgot about Rundlestone, looked nice.
The prices are a bit lower this year due to the economy.

Have you considered 2 nts in Jasper. The drive to Jasper is beautiful and the Patricia Lake cottages are very affordable. You could then spend your last night in Banff. We got the Rimrock for $190US/nt.--and the exchange rate last year was horrible. Loved the Rimrock--we could have actually gotten a cheaper room there. Changed our original reservation 2 weeks before the trip--good rate on www.hotels.com. We used www.kayak.com to get quick hotel rates.
We don't really like moving around that much, but we love Jasper. It's worth it--and the drive is spectacular. Have you seen my trip report from last Sept.?
