Dear friends,
Time to plan for 2007. I need your votes on the following subject:

I am asking only those who have been to BOTH Alaska & Can.Rockies to please help me choose between the fourth visit to Alaska or the first visit to Canadian Rockies.

I just can't stop going to Alaska and I heard the opinions that after Alaska everything else in (Pacific) Northwest will be just OK.

This message is posted on both Alaska and Alberta forums.

All I can say is Alaska is just terrific, but, since the Cdn Rockies seem to be a serious consideration - just go for it. You'll never be able to decide which you prefer until you go - and the Cdn Rockies are beautiful. After four visits anywhere, it's probably time for a change.

I think the two areas are too different to compare. Go to the Canadian rockies and see for yourself.

Both very different, but very beautiful, areas. If you have been to Alaska so many times, why don't you see something different? The Cdn. Rockies are gorgeous, you will not be disappointed.

I drove to Alaska a few years ago, and on the way back swung to Edmonton, Calgary, and then the Canadian Rockies (again). The Canadian Rockies were certainly gorgeous, but seemed pretty insignificant when measured by the everyday scenery in Alaska.

At least you've been to Alaska three times, so you're well aware.

I don't want to vote, but just want to second your notions.

A lot will depend on what you like to do I believe. Do you like to hike or just view from the roadways. If you do like to hike and have done that in
Alaska it probably would be a pleasant change to try it in the Rockies. I also believe that you should try something different. it certainly wont be boring or lackluster-the Rockies are wonderful.

Having done both I concur they are totally different. If you do the Rockies consider the less touristy sites for extended stays. enjoy the hot springs, hiking, and a different kind of scenery. I don't tink I will every foret the 7 golden grizzlies (some with cubs) we saw in Denali national park, but that is a LONG way to go for us. If you go to the Rockies consider heading into the Okanagan for a totally different kind of holdiay amidst some excellent wineries and beaches. Or perhaps head down to the Knanaskas area and from there over the places such as Head Smashed Inn Buffalo Jump or any of the wonderful southern parks.- sorry for any spelling errors!

I agree they are quite different - and I also agree you should try the Rockies. If you like the less-touristy areas then definatly avoid Banff. Even Jasper is becoming quite touristy these days, though it is nothing like Banff. My favourite place in the Rockies is Waterton, which is far less touristy. It will still seem crowded next to Alaska though.

As others have said... they're very different. You don't say where you're coming FROM... but for this California girl...the two are vastly different and both very much worth a visit.

You've been to Alaska, so you've most likely felt the "rugged... we do what we want here" attitude from the land and from the people. Alaska seems overwhelming in that way. Rough and rugged and harsh.

The Canadian Rockies are beautiful to me in a more gentle way. Driving from Calgary... there is no gradual "up hill" drving like there is here in California, no foothills, no tree line. You are on completely flat land and then all of a sudden you are in them... the mountains seem like they were just dropped there in the middle of the praries!

The whole railroad history of the Rockies is facinating to me also, that one industry just cut through and made so many things possible. Rugged in it's own way.

It's always fun to try new places! For me, I'd try the Rockies...otherwise you'll never know!

We spend 2 weeks in Alaska last year and 2 weeks in the Canadian Rockies the year before. (Just looked at our photos of both a few hours ago)

We drove about 1200 miles in a little over a week in Alaska (Anchorage to Denali to Homer and back) and don't know the exact milege in Canada but it was close to that (Calgary to Banff to Jasper and down to Waterton and back)
Alaska is very beautiful but the Rockies are also amazing.

I wouldn't say that Alaska is prettier because there are diffent sights in both places. We loved the Canadian Rockies and thought it was one of the most gorgeous places we've ever been.

I would be very surprised if you were disappointed.
