Black flies in Montreal/surrounding area 1st week June?
Hi - thinking about an 8 night trip to Montreal 1st week in June. Not sure where to go yet, poss 2-3 nights in Montreal then rent a car and tour for remaining time. Is this a good time of year to go? Are black flies a problem once we leave the city?
thanks,
Julie

The laurentians get the black flies, by the water and at night is the worst time; eastern townships not so much, some say not at all.
Mosquitoes are annoying all summer long, as close as the suburbs; eating outside after dusk close to a lake or river is risky. Otherwise, you should be fine.
Early June is usually not so hot and humid as july or august so I would not worry about it.
Some municipalities in the laurentians have alleviated the problem, I've heard, with some kind of spraying.

To answer my own question, we (I, they never love my husband) got mauled by some sort of bug (skeeters?) in La Malbaie on the St. Lawrence north of Quebec city- 3 bites on my forehead that bled and then were as big as mosquito bites and as red as zits for almost a week! They were tiny flies, like gnats. Didn't hurt but annoying.
