Anyone ever been on a Canadian Rockie Train Tour?

it seems that you spend all your time on the train and you only get to see the destinations at night. is it worth it?

Or put another way, all the train travelling is done in daylight with an overnight stop in a hotel so that you don't miss any of the scenery, rather than travelling overnight by sleeping-car.

On the Banff/Calgary to Vancouver 'Kicking Horse' route the scenery is fabulous, and the journey is over the historic Canadian Pacific Railway opened in 1885 across Canada. On this train, the journey IS the destination!

I've put photos and advice on the different routes at www.seat61.com/RockyMountaineer.htm

Agree. We've taken this route as far back as when it was the regularly scheduled route of VIA's "The Canadian". The scenery is spectacular and you certainly want to see as much as possible in daylight.

The trip is not about the destinations.

Agree with the other posters. Seeing the scenery from the train during daylight hours is the point of this trip.

You can just take the regularly-scheduled train from Vancouver to Jasper. It leaves in the evening and you admittedly miss some scenery that night, but the best part of the ride is during the next day, from Kamloops to Jasper. We did that and then rented a car to drive the Icefields Parkway to Banff. Alternatively, there are tours out of Jasper to places like the Columbia Icefields and Lake Louise.

Of course, it all may be moot if they go out on strike next week, which looks like a distinct possibility.

VIA rail is on strike, but not the Rocky Mountaineer. http://www.rockymountaineer.com/

I took it in 2003 with an English cousin on her first trip to Canada. We both enjoyed it very much.
