What to see in one day in Papeete

We will be in Papeete for one day on our way to Moorea. What would you suggest we do and see? Thanks!
You MUST go to the market. It is downtown and easy to get to. You will find the best souvenier bargains there. If you can't afford a classic black pearl, you will find some vendors who have black pearl "rejects" that are reasonably priced. Other than that, I'm not knowledgable about Papeete. Know there are museums, etc. to see but have not been to any. Is fun just walking the streets by the ferry docks looking at various shops.

We had one day as well--hire a driver and take an
island tour--Gaugin museum is interesting--not
exceptional, but interesting and since this is Gaugin country, this is logical. I do not know
about the market, but it sounds like alot of local
color which would be fun. This is also the transvestite capital of the world so people watching is remarkable. Frankly, I wouldn't care to spend
much more than a day on this island. Are we glad we
took advantage of the day? Yes!
