Visiting Alice Springs

Visiting Alice Springs
Leaving in two days for a month. Final leg of long journey, flying in to Alice Springs from Ayers Rock for half day and evening. 1] Having trouble choosing accomodation for 2 seniors for 1 night - wish to be close to town in decent budget with ensuite, don't care about frills, needs to be clean, good service. Is Kathy's Place close to Todd Mall? 2] Orig. intended to tour around A.S. in rent vehicle including sites, Stanley Chasm but positive reviews of Desert Park make me question priorities. Now thinking of cancelling car, taking tour to Desert Park. Can someone help me make the choice please? Thanks, Louise, Canada

Can't comment on Kathy's Place but appears to be aboy 1.5 km (a mile)from the northern end of Todd St./Mall - http://maps.google.com.au/maps?hl=en...=directions-to
I went out to Stanley Chasm and other gorges a few years back and it is not much more than experiencing that it is a very narrow gap that sees all of a few minutes of sunshine on a sunny day.
The Desert Park was not around or I didn't go to it anyway but it does seem to be considered OK by most people who do go there, but a couple of hours may be enough and you could probably fit both in though it would seem that you'll not make it to Stanley Chasm by midday for its few minutes of sunshine.

Personally, I'd prefer to hop in a car and head to the West MacDonnell Ranges.
Stanley Chasm and 'other gorges' that Bushranger rather understated are definitely worth a visit.
Unfortunately places like Ormiston Gorge would require a couple of nights stay but you would be able to see Stanley Chasm and Ellery Creek Big Hole which is only about 120km from Alice Springs.
You may well miss the sunlight coming through the chasm but the place is still quite beautiful - beautiful colours etc.
I've had several extended visits to the Red Centre and it is one of my favourite places on earth. I do hope you enjoy this beautiful part of the world.

I'm not saying they're not worth a visit but in half a day!,
and then perhaps my understatement is from one who has lived in a lot of country regions, so it is kind of more normal.

I can't help with accommo as the only place I have stayed at in the Alice is the YHA (which, BTW, is brilliant.)
As to what to do, well you've sort of restricted your options by having so short a time. Who on earth advised you that such a short stop was the best thing to do?
I love the West Macs (the East too) and spent the best part of a day at the Desert Park. So it's hard for me to advise as I NEVER travel with such a tight pre-ordained intinerary.
The bottom line is, where else will you go in Australia? And where else will you already have been?
We know you've been to Uluru (and one assumes at least one of Kings Canyon or the Olgas) so in that case I think I would go for the Desert Park. The Raptor show is a great spectacle and if you haven't taken a tour where the point is to get out and have a good long look at the minutiae (most tourists don't) then the Desert Park will be a whole new world.
The YHA has double and twins so you might like to check it out. It's within easy walkable distance to the town centre unlike the resorty stuff.
